Heads up for OOTP12: Real Life Winter Meetings

The GM meetings were held earlier this week: Major points discussed were expanded playoffs and changing draft rules. Most of the meetings was spent on the amateur draft.

- Clubs want to make it a world wide draft. Right now only USA and Canadian players are subject to MLB draft. Which allows the richer clubs to spend whatever they want on Latin ball players or other players from around the world.

- They are looking at changing the rules concerning draft pick compensation and free agents. Clubs are abusing the rules, one way discussed teams are allowing Class A free agents to walk and signing another Class A player and gaining an extra pick in process.

- Teams also want to be able to trade draft picks. This will give GMs more flexibly in making trades.

- GMs voted to expand playoffs are early as next year. GMs voted to add 1 extra wild card team to each league. Division winners will get a bye. A three game series will be played by the two wild card teams before the full playoffs start on Friday. It will eventually come into being as more revenue, but players have to pass it to have in place by 2011.

- Teams want to add a new 7 day Disabled List just for concussion players.

- Lesser items were discussed including twitter during games, hankie waving in the playoffs, but expanding the playoffs and draft changes were the top order of business

I like the extra wild card team idea and the world wide draft.

I do not like the extra Wild Card idea for real life baseball because baseball is still the only North American sport that limits the amount of teams into the playoffs and a good majority of the time, you get the best 4 teams in the league in their playoffs.

Pretty much everything on that list has to be negotiated with the players' union. So, whether some or all of those things come to pass for the 2011 season depends on how quickly MLB and the MLBPA can come to a new CBA.
