1982: After the Fire
After watching all my work go for naught in a BSOD flash, I wanted to do something a little less heavy on the prep work. I decided to start with 1982.
Basic concept: the 1981 strike wiped out the whole season, the owners reorganized in 1982 and the players came back. With few exceptions, I imagine the ownership groups would be fairly similar to those before the strike. There is also a second tier major league, formed when Toronto and Montreal were left out of the reorganized Majors. Every player (using Gambo mixed DB, all players who had 1981 as their last season were edited to import to the 1982 season, 1719 players to start with) has been made a free agent. So, we'll have a two month scramble for talent. I've probably made every team a little too financially secure for this first season, but I don't want any GM getting stupid and blowing an undersized budget on three stars and 22 teenagers. All the settings are the standard 1982 setting. No salary arbitration, Free Agency is granted faster in the 2nd tier league. Not using the DH in any league. I don't have any strong feelings about the DH, I just find I manage more aggressively in non-DH leagues, and I like that. The 3 big leagues use a 154 game schedule. When I mention managers, the names are just placeholders, I've done no adjustment to strategies. While my last dynasty attempt was very 'hands-off', this era just begs me to be 'hands-on'. These are the years where I really became of fan, these are the players that, even with today's abundance of information, I feel I know the best. So, I'm probably going to over manage this league.
There also feels like there are stories here, stories a CPU adversary would not care about. Take Yaz for example. A 42-year old 1B in a league without a DH is a hard sell, especially if he wants multiple years. With the CPU, there is no drama. But acting as Boston and having to deciding on Yaz, that feels more real to me. That's one of the things I love about this game, different leagues should be played in different ways. Here are some of the offers out there on the first of the year, 1982. Atlanta Cecil Cooper 1B, 3 yrs 3,750,000 Baltimore Ron Davis MR, 2 yrs, 200,000 Jeff Reardon MR, 1 yr, 250,000 Mark Ross MR, 1 yr, 165,000 Joe Price SP, 2 yrs, 555,000 Jay Howell SP, 2 yrs, 450,000 Eddie Murray 1B, 3 yrs, 1,525,000 Boston Rich Gossage CL, 2 yrs, 1,982,500 Steve Carlton SP, 2 yrs, 2,875,000 John Candelaria SP, 3 yrs, 2,675,000 Brooklyn John Candelaria SP, 4 yrs, 2,750,000 Rollie Fingers CL, 2 yrs, 1,325,000 Bert Blyleven SP, 3 yrs, 1,883,333 John Lowenstein LF, 2 yrs, 3,050,000 Buffalo Mike Schmidt 3B, 5 yrs, 2,650,000 Eddie Murray 1B, 2 yrs, 1,425,000 Reggie Jackson RF, 2 yrs, 2,462,000 Ron Kittle LF, 4 yrs, 742,500 Steve Carlton SP, 3 yrs 2,816,666 Al Holland MR, 2 yrs, 440,000 Rich Gossage CL, 2 yrs, 2,100,000 |

Been bombed at work, haven't had any time. Teach me to let people have vacations.
One thing I'm wrestling with in my team building is what holdovers would be offered contracts. Like I can see the Canaries wanting Eddie Murray and Jim Palmer, but would they gamble on Ripken in that instance? I could see Atlanta valuing Horner over Murphy. Any 80's era guys with thoughts to share on that? |

Sorry this seems all disjointed, but I'm still trying to feel out what I want from this dynasty. It is a solid concept, the Owner's "won" a year long dispute and restructured. I don't remember all the wheeling and dealings, I just remember I-Cubs and Richmond Braves on my TV.
I have always loved building 'new' leagues and stocking expansion teams. That's kinda what I did here, 40 "expansion" teams and a really big new league. Each with, conceivably, a decent core to build around. So I sketched out some GM profiles for each of the teams. Like the manager setting, just some basic tenancies, preferences and other kinds of junk. Like Atlanta. Pretty smart, willing to spend more than average, premium on defense, willing to give second line/young players a shot. Fairly aggressive and values contact and eye more than power. In this universe, Fulton County is great for average/gap power, really depresses hr's (I put the actual dimensions into an old ballpark spreadsheet--are there any accurate real park #'s out there?). There was, considering the depths the Braves had sunk to in the mid-70's, reason for hope in Dixie. The Bill Lucas picks/signings (Hubbard, Murphy and Horner among others) were starting to bubble up from Richmond. Leading up to the 1/2 pennant in the real '82. So for the Firecrackers the idea for building would be lock down the young talent the old Braves paid for. (If I was really obsessive I could take it to the minor league level, but I don't have that kind of wastetime anymore) Of the non-Core guys, Cecil Cooper seemed a good fit. At that point, .300 hitter with bunches of doubles. The HR totals could drop to low 20's in this park, but 50 doubles isn't out of the question. Looking at the Braves' 1980 roster the list of guys I think the Firecrackers would want would be Benedict, Hubbard, Horner, Murphy and Tommy Boggs (most of the players developed to that point were hitters/fielders). Niekro, is a "Yaz South" situation. At that point, Niekro was Atlanta's mainstay man, there since the move. Declining in skills, but still eating innings and pitching well enough. I could see an offer from Atlanta when they have a better idea who else would be in the rotation. If they whiff in their pursuit of other starters, they can't count on a 43 year old man to be an ace. So that's what I'm working on with each team. Buffalo's GM is HR happy and is trying to make a splash in a new market. The Brooklyn Robins (the old Mets, I guess) went Yankee in their approach, big dollars at big names. Boston's guy likes 'safe' choices. Baltimore's guy is too enamored with trying to build a 'starless' winner. Ideally, in this universe, each team would be trying to build not just a winning team, but at some levels a recognizable team. That's the main reason I don't want the AI building the teams. In restructured baseball, there would still be that continuance desired. That link to history that would give the 'new' league legitimacy. I realize you guys don't want to read each damn offer I post, I'll spare you that. I'll just note here any important signings. So, back to baseball after a hellish week. |
