elimination tournaments - and double elim?

1) Someone mentioned playing a double elimination tourney for their league following a 'regular' season and have been wondering how you would make that happen.

The only way I thought it possible would be to do it as a regular season - creating a custom schedule with your initial seed games and then editing it as you go along.

2) For some reason I have never liked simming full seasons so I was also thinking of trying just a single elimination tourney with great teams as I have read about, but I'd want to be able to basically skip the regular season - I was thinking the way to make this work would be to have a very very short regular season, let's call it a pre-tourney pre-season and the results could be used as a way to 'seed' the tourney.

Any thoughts?

I suppose the only way you could do such a thing, is by making your own custom schedule as you have said.

Now, as for having qualifiers automatically move on, I dunno if it can done. Seems to me you would have to add more games every single round, so you could schedule the proper teams against each other.

I know the Japanese use single elimination at their high school level. Personally, I am not at all a fan of single elimination. I like the way Little League used to do it in regional, states, and districts play back when I was a kid with double elimination.
