As an amateur boxing coach, I'm in major disagreement with it. USA Boxing has done enough harm to amateur boxing by disallowing 'smoker' type shows mainly because they aren't getting a show fee. They claim safety, but that's LOL funny. Now, boxers are going to compete for $ in an attempt to make an olympic team is only going to breed further corruption among coaches, region heads, judges, refes, and the like.

well looking a the Bejing Olympics, Teddy Atlas was VERY VOCAL on the judging of the bouts (and even I had to question some of the results) while its good for the fighters to get the money they need, yes it is bad for corruption and even more corruption from promoters. USA had a horrible showing there and something needs to be done, the Russian have a major training facility and they haven't been a factor since the wall was torn down.

Fundamentals, American boxers rarely have them. Coaches, for the most part, push amateurs into the ring too quickly long before they learn the required fundamentals that will make them a success in the ring. Many boxers keep their weight on their front leg reducing their reach, negating side to side movement, and causing them not to be able to punch in multiple punch combinations. Basically, they lead with their face. Giving a flawed amateur some cash isn't going to help that.
Coaches need to check their egos and teach instead of collecting dues and creating new ways to make themselves look good with fancy pad work and cosmetically pleasing ways to wrap hands that isn't functional for the protection of the boxer.

now that I will agree on no need for ego's especially on the amateur level. The 08 team was simply not ready. It's not a simple fix but unlike softball, roidball, track, gymnastics, and swimming, Boxing takes a backseat in the Olympics. And yes I know softball and roidball have been thrown out of the Olympics (good) but that is where the attention is. Yes the gymnastic gals are on the hottie side and a drug addict is still ruling swimming up to a point, but I still say boxing needs an overhaul. MMA even with their ego roid rage is still popular (why is beyond me), Wrestling is more entertainment than real (yes its fake) and ego's are prevailing in Boxing as well especially with jack wagon promoters, way too damn many titles and organizations and yes even greed. I like the way the tournament is being held and it proves that boxing is way more popular in Europe than here. We need more of that. We also need Mayweather to get over himself and fight Pac Man.

Boxing will never advance without a National commission in each country and a single international governing body like FIFA. This will never happen because of giant egos, ignorance, and greed. They started calling for this to happen at the start of the last century. Maybe in a few more....
