For those of you who play "single-season" historical replays...

Just wanted to get peoples' thoughts on settings they've tried, what works for them, etc. when playing the historical replay mode. Most of the threads here seem to be about multiple-year dynasties, so the settings and tweaks are pretty different, since it's basically a whole other style of game.

For AI player evaluation, I like 10/60/20/10. I know there was a big thread a while back about "stats only" being the most realistic option, but I like to have the AI look at the ratings little bit. I think it creates a nice balance, and doesn't destroy the realism from what I've seen.

I'm kind of torn between the 1-year, the 3-year, the 3-year+double weight for recalc settings though. I'm pretty sure 1-year is the "standard" way to play this, especially since it's the default setting when you start a single-season replay. But at the same time I find the 3-year is useful with players that had an injury-plagued year. Like Randy Johnson in 1996. His ratings using 1-year are lower than usual, because in real-life he missed a lot of time due to injury. But when I add his 95 and 97 stats in the mix, he's a lot more "normal". I don't want my players penalized for a season where they were injured in real-life.

And as for double weight, I haven't really experimented too much with it, but it seems (so far) like a nice middle ground between the 1-year and the 3-year. Anyone else have a strong preference one way or the other?

I kind of alternate between High and Normal when it comes to injuries...though Normal + High Fatigue seems to be my favorite of all the combinations.

Overall though, I find all of the settings to be an improvement over previous years.

I'll just point one thing out. With those settings for AI player evaluation, the AI will be giving heavy weight to players stats in the previous two years. The current year stats won't start to carry much weight until some time around the middle of the season. Giving some weight to ratings helps to offset that a little, but you need to realize that you are probably handicapping the AI to some extent -- you will have a better idea of the current worth of the players than the AI will.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I play with no ratings displayed, just stats. So I'm kind of "blind" when it comes to ratings.

Hope that makes more sense

But you aren't blind when it comes to names. Your OP showed that you knew something about Randy Johnson. If the Randy Johnson in your league was a fictional player it would be different. But if you want the AI to have a chance to have to give it the tools -- it does not know names.

Hmm that is a good point actually, I never really thought of that.

So now for single-season replays I'll try out keeping the AI options the way they are, maybe tinker a bit as I get a better feel for the game.

And either way, it's not as big of an issue to me as the recalc settings, or injury/fatigue levels. I'm still testing all the options, trying to figure out which one my "favorite" is...
