Cooperstown Baseball League

Hello-

The year is 2090 and somewhere way up high where age doesnt matter and where stress is a thing of the past our story begins. By 2090 all the players who would be playing through 2010 will not be alive anymore, so in heaven somewhere baseball continues, kind of like it does in the Field of dreams, where the best of all time can create a league of the best ever.

Trading and finances will be turned off for the first season as each player will represent a franchise that they represented; only the best to ever play have been invited to determine the best players and franchise ever. I have removed four teams in hopes of making the game and season more competitive. The following two teams have been eliminated:

Florida Marlins
Tampa Rays

The other divisions are:

American League Standings
Eastern Division
Baltimore Orioles
Boston Red Sox
Cleveland Indians
New York (A) Yankees
Toronto Blue Jays

Central Division
Chicago (A) White Sox
Detroit Tigers
Kansas City Royals
Milwaukee Brewers
Minnesota Twins

Western Division
Los Angeles (A) Angels
Oakland Athletics
Seattle Mariners
Texas Rangers

National League Standings

Eastern Division
Atlanta Braves
New York (N) Mets
Philadelphia Phillies
Washington Nationals

Central Division
Chicago (N) Cubs
Cincinnati Reds
Houston Astros
Pittsburgh Pirates
St. Louis Cardinals

Western Division
Arizona Diamondbacks
Colorado Rockies
Los Angeles (N) Dodgers
San Diego Padres
San Francisco Giants

I promise to do my best to finish this time, team by team previews are think are very important before we start so thats what I will start with.

Strengths
Not many but the team does have Matt Williams and Adam Dunn in the middle of their lineup. Also the team has good speed and defense and really has nothing to lose as little to nothing is expected of them. Curt Schilling is obviously a key to this team as he will be expected to carry the load of the staff.

Weaknesses
No one really hits for a high average and their is a lack of starpower for a team so young. The bullpen is very weak with Matt Mantei barely able to be counted on. Also strike outs will be a problem for this team moving forward.

Key Figuire
As mentioned it will all ride on Curt Schilling's shoulders as the outspoken right hander will try to pile up the innings and earn some wins.

Expectations
Being so young a franchise no one really expects them to compete much less win anything. Arizona however will be looking for a hot start and the ability to sneak up on the rest of the NL West powers while they overlook them. It could be a long year in Arizona but im sure it will be fun.

26RRico CartyLF00000000.000.000.000

Strengths
The Braves have assembled some of the best pitchers of all time. Warren Spahn, Maddux and Glavine all will be tough to beat with Maddux given the opportunity to show just how close he comes to the best of alltime. Hank Aaron of course is the star of the team and the offense is well balanced and may not need to score too many with the pitchers, John Smoltz will be a big help out of the pen.

Weaknesses
The infield has some real questions. First and second base arnt the strongest as alot wil be asked from Rabbitt Maranville and Joe Adcock. Rafael Furcal also may not be good enough at this level. This infield will actually be looked at defensively as much as offensively in their ability to help the pitching staff.

Key Figuire
Hank Aaron will need to be the man who gets the offense going everyday. The pitching staff will need support and most of the pressure will fall on Aaron to produce the goods.

Expectations
The Braves expect to compete for a championship and do have the talent to do just that. The NL East will be tough with the Phillies and Mets but overall many feel the Braves are good enough to win the division.

Is the game okay with you having an odd number of teams (13/15) in each league? If not, you might want to move the Brewers back to the AL - possibly the ALC while bumping the Indians to the ALE.

That would make the AL alignment: 5/5/4, and the NL: 5/4/5

14LAl BumbryCF00000000.000.000.000
26LBoog PowellLF00000000.000.000.000

Strengths
Balance. This team is strong all over the diamond and that is what you need if you are to compete in the leagues toughest divsision. Frank Robinson will join Eddie Murray in hopes of doing the damage to support a deep starting pitching staff. The Brookes Robinson glove is also something everyteam in the league had.

Weaknesses
The bullpen doesnt have the closer it seems to need. Greg Olsen and Tim Stoddard may be a problem in a close game late which no doubt there will be many. Tippy Martinez was also added to the rosteri in hopes of adding more depth as it could get interesting.

Key figuire
Jim Palmer is the ace and will definately have to pitch like it. Palmer has the personality and concentration to be a winner and will have to have the poise against the likes of Ruth and Ted Williams.

Expectations
The question is if the Orioles can match up with the Red Sox and the Yankees and most think they can not. Still the Orioles are deep in talent and can expect to be close to a .500 record.

Yes that would make more sense, a 14/14 alingment. Thanks for the suggestion.

39LMike GreenwellLF00000000.000.000.000

Strengths
The Red Sox may be the deepest team this side of the Yankees in the entire league. With a rotation that has Roger Clemens and Cy Young at the top and Josh Beckett at the back there is little hope for hitters. Ted Williams leads an offense that has depth all the way to the bench where the likes of Fred Lynn and Dwight Evans wait. The Sox have the talent to beat their rival Yankees in the biggest of ways, with their very best against their very best. How will the Babe be recieved at Fenway?

Weaknesses
Not much to pick on here but the team isnt the strongest in its infield with Nomar Garciapara and Johnny Peskey holding the spots. The bullpen will also need to prove itself with John Pappelbon sure to be in the close games late going up against other closers like Mariano Rivera.

Exppectations
The Red Sox just want to beat the Yankees and they do expect to. It will be a long difficult season but the Sox if they can stay healthy do have the talent to make it. Ted Williams is already talking about a batting title but he will be best served to concentrate on his team and their efforts in the toughest division in the game.

9RMinnie MinosoLF00000000.000.000.000
4LHarold BainesRF00000000.000.000.000

Strengths
The Sox are very deep on the mound and at the plate. It is the combination of Joe Jackson and Frank Thomas however that has to be the strength of this team. These two players will be on base a bunch of times and with support from batters like Harold Baines and Carlton Fisk, the runs should pile up on the south side of Chicago. Team defense is also a strength for this team.

Weaknesses
The bullpen may be a bit sketchy as one season wonder Bobby Thigpen tries to take the role of closer. The Sox will need to prove they could win games late with Bobby Jenks helping out where he can. The starting pitching is strong, although a few are saying that it might be better on paper then as a unit.

Expectations
No doubt that the Sox will be majot players in the AL Central. Their rivals will no doubt be the Tigers who are as old as the Sox and as rich in talent. Anything less then a winning season will be a major disapointment as Tony Larussa takes over the team he started his managerial career with.

Its probably too late to do this, but I would suggest having Pedro Martinez on the Red Sox. They were the team he spent his best years with, and he was certainly better with them than Josh Beckett has done. Of course, he might be on a different team, but I think his best years were probably with the Sox

Thanks Pete I appreciate the feedback and you are right on that Pedro's best years were in Boston. However I opted to keep him on the Nationals/Expos as there he will be the ace of the staff and not a #3 man behind Cy Young and Roger Clemens.

Dont worry, Pedro will be strutting his stuff, just not for the Red Sox. With the dismantling of the Marlins, Beckett became available and because he hasnt been as dominant in my thinking will be a good #3 starter.

Strengths
Be prepared for some power and some runs in the Friendly confines. With Sammy Sosa, Hack Wilson, Ernie Banks, and Ron Santo the long ball shouldnt be a problem. Add this to the fact that Ryne Sandberg and Mark Grace will be on base to score the runs and the Cubs should have a lineup that matches up with anyone. All of the Cubs legends are here.

Weaknesses
The pitching is strong behind Three Finger Brown and Ferguson Jenkins, but after the top two things drop off a bit. Rick Sutcliffe and Kerry Wood arnt exactly hall of fame pitchers and one wonders if the team will be as strong with them on the mound. Remember the Cubs are not trying to be competitive but win the division against the likes of their rivals from St. Louis.

Expectations
So can the most hardluck franchise in all sports actually put it all together to win a season that represents so much more? The Cubs have the talent in almost every position and can go as far as anyone. Hopefully the luck will be on their side as many of these players have vivid memories of heartbreaking failures.

Strengths
Depth in the outfield and at catcher have this team thinking it can more then compete in the central with the Cubs and Cardinals. Eric Davis and George Foster wont get much starting time becuase the outfield is loaded with Edd Roush, Vada Pinson, and Ken Griffey. The catching pair of Johnny Bench and Ernie Lombardi is also as good as it gets.

Weaknesses
Starting pitching may be a concern as after Johnny Van Der Meer there is some drop in talent. Mario Soto and Dolf Luque will have to have very good seasons if the Reds are to win. The bullpen anchored by Rob Dibble also could be alot deeper and stronger.

Expectations
The pitching just may hold them back but the offense will surely be as good as anyones. If the Reds can get some luck and have one of their arms step up, they should be winners and competing for a wildcard spot. If the pitching goes south, this team will fade fast.

Strengths
An incredible lineup full of speed and power the Indians are going to score runs aplenty. Albert Belle and Manny Ramirez are back together and along with Jim Thome will give headaches to a number of pitching coaches. Kenny Lofton is the spark at the top of the order and the leadership of Lou Boudrue makes it all come together on and off the field.

Weaknesses
The catcher position isnt the most strong and after Bob Feller the pitching staff will have to prove themselves. Can Gaylord Perry and Cliff Lee do the job from start to start? The bullpen will also need to be better then most to win the close games.

Expectations
In the toughest division in the game the Indians have to be at their best to compete. The Yankees and Red Sox are as tough as it gets and the Indians will hope their offense can produce enough to at least compete for a wild card run. Expectations are indeed high but reality may be diffrent as someone has to lose

Strengths
Coors Field and their high altitude may be the only thing the Rockies have going for them as they compete in an uphill battle for respect. The lineup led by Larry Walker and Todd Helton can be dangerous and shouldnt be skoffed at, but still this team is team in truth is just happy to be competing.

Weaknesses
The pitching has to be ranked worse in the league wiht Mike Hampton the best they have and little else in support. This staff should get lit up from top to bottom. In fact when and if the Rockies get anyone out their should be a standing ovation at Coors.

Expectations
Have fun and score some runs. In their short history the Rocks dont have the talent to make a run at anything but will definately be a fun team to watch as they may have football like scrores to deal with. At least they dont have to face the Yankees.

Strengths
The Tigers may have the best player of all time in Ty Cobb and now he has a chance to prove it. Cobb is part of a dangerous lineup that is deep with skill and guile. Al Kaline joins Cobb in an excellent outfield also joined by Harry Heilmann. The Tigers are among the deepest team in the league at all positions and we havent even mentioned Hank Greenberg.

Weaknesses
Catcher isnt particularly strong with Lance Parrish getting most of the work. The pitching staff is good at this level but is it great? Mickey Lolich and Denny Mclain were short lived stars that burned outm one gets a feeling that much of the load will fall on Jack Morris.

Expectations
No doubt that Cobb and the Tigers want and expect to win the division and more. The White Sox are really the toughest foe but most expect Detroit to win the division but if they can play with the Yankees and Red Sox is still to be seen. The Tigers hope those two teams will beat up on eachother.

Strengths
A well rounded infield bodes welll for the Astros who will have their work cuout for them in the central. Jeff Bagwell, Craig Biggio, and Ken Camminiti all play well on offense and defense and make the Astros formitable. The Killer B's are what the Astros are all about, their competitive drive and get down and dirty mentality will keep them in games they should lose.

Weaknesses
Lack of a real power hitter in evident up and down their lineup and the pressure will be on Lance Berkman and Carlos Lee to produce. JR Richard and the rotation will need to show more then what is expected, this punch can definately throw hard but could be prone to the long ball. Joe Niekro may see himself sneak in the rotation as well.

Expectations
Be hard to beat and compete every game. The Astros may not have the talent to play with the big boys in this league but their scrappers will definately get them respect and more wins then maybe we may expect. There will be not trophies to speak of however.

Stengths
Getting on base and creating runs are what the Royals are good at. Without the big power hitter a number of players have five tools like Willie Wilson, Carlos Beltra, Bo Jackson, and Hal McRae. The Royals are a fast team that move well from station to station. Dan Quissenberry is also one of the best closers that any team can have. Of course there is also George Brett at third base with his skill and intangibles.

Weaknesses
Will the pitching hold up? Brett Saberhagen, Kevin Appier, and Mark Gubiza were good but not great. This pitching staff is sure to have its rough points and possible injury which is why this team may not be able to compete. The pitching for the Royals will tell us just how far they can go. A lack of a true home run hitter also is of notice.

Expectations
The Royals wont quit against anyone but also probably wont win anything. The team is out to suprize and show that the organization is alot deeper and better then people may think. Still all the players are pretty much from the same era, which will be interesting.

Strengths
Good defense is a part of this Angels team especially in the outfield where Jim Edmonds and Vlad Guerrero are great all around players. Mike Scioscia is also a great motivator and strategist in the dugout; the Angels are a smart team and many will be overlooking them however dont expect them to beat themselves.

Weaknesses
The pitching staff is going to have to work wonders for the Angles as they dont have the arms that other team around the league do. Frank Tanana and Chuck Finley need to pitch smart and contain the amount of baserunners they see. Power is also a concern on this team when they need the big home run.

Expectations
The division in the West is only four teams and other then the Athletics can be competed for. The Angels want to be competitive but of course there are few to no expectations that they can win a division.

Strengths
The Pitching staff is as good as it gets. Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale are only the beginning as Orel Hershiser and Don Sutton complete a dominant rotation. The Dodgers wont allow many runs and have the balanced lineup including maybe the fastest team in the league to score the few runs they will need.

Weaknesses
Third base and shortstop may not be the deepest and the bullpen could be weaker then most might want for the Dodgers to win a championship. The Dodgers also need to show that they can win the big games against especially the Giants.

Expectations
The Dodgers expect to win the championship and with their arms definately will be in the hunt.

Strengths
The team has quite a good infield. Paul Molitor and Cecil Cooper patrol the right side while Gray Sheffield and Robin Yount take care of the left side, all these guys could hit a ton too. The Brewers are sure to play hard and be a thorn in the side of the bigger powers. The Brewer bullpen isnt bad at all either.

Weaknesses
Starting pitching is nowhere near where it needs to be to compete and the Brewers will indeed allow a ton of runs. When the likes of Teddy Higuira and Ben Sheets are expected to lead your rotation, luck is needed in a regular baseball season much less this one that has every great player to ever play.

Expectations
Not much is expected of the Brewers who is a franchise that has never won a championship and no one expects that the change now. The Milwaukee fans can be happy their team is a part of this great season.
