Catcher Arm Strength / Stolen Base Attempts

In my leagues, catchers' arm strength is more highly correlated with stolen base attempts rather than with caught stealing %.

For example, Cleveland has a catcher with a 24 defensive rating and a 22 arm rating. He's played almost every game. Cleveland has only had 21 stolen base attempts against them. The other teams in the league have had 68-90 stolen base attempts against them.

But Cleveland has only thrown out 38.1% of the runners stealing bases, (2nd worst in the league) and the stud catcher has only thrown out 35.7%. This may be because Cleveland's starting pitchers have HLD ratings of 4, 5, 15, and 13.

The league average is between 36.9% - 55.7% caught stealing. The team with 55.7% caught stealing has a catcher with a 11 defensive rating and a 10 catcher arm. The pitchers in the rotation have HLD ratings of 17, 16, 8, 6, with the first two pitchers having the most innings.

As in OOTP 10, it appears that the biggest factor preventing stolen base attempts is your catcher's arm strength. Catcher's arm strength may play some role in caught stealing, as the manual says, but I've never really seen it. HLD rating has always been as big, or a bigger factor in caught stealing.

By the way, none of this is meant as criticism, I'm just reporting my observations.

And although this is a small sample size, my 10 seasons in OOTP 10 consistently yielded the same results.

I've noticed this too recently playing the games out. I was playing against a catcher with an arm strength in the 30s (out of 100), and I kept trying to steal against him and was getting nailed half the time with really fast baserunners. I then realized it was because of the pitcher. In an earlier game against a pitcher worse at holding runners I was running on this catcher all game long with no problem.

Thanks, perfect. I think that along with the speed rating mentioned by Marcus in post #23 of that thread, catcher arm strength must be taken into account when deciding whether to attempt stolen bases.

Which is certainly the case in real life. Teams are going to run against Victor Martinez a lot more often than Yadier Molina.
