34 team league schedule question

Hey I'm playing a fictional 34 team league in ootp10. I'm just wondering how many games you'd say would suit the league. Is 162 too short or just right as I have 4 teams more than the majors.

I suppose it depends how balanced you want the schedule to be, although I defer to LGO and others on the finer points of schedule making.

Do you have a divisional structure within each subleague?

ah, alignment messed itself up.. take two

FL East: 6 teams
FL Cent: 5 teams
FL West: 5 teams

CL East: 6 teams
CL Cent: 7 teams
CL West: 5 teams

The divisions are a bit awkward but I'm just a sucker for geography!

Any reason why the CL isn't three divisions of six teams? This is going to be one heck of a schedule to put together.

Based on the last line of his post, I'd guess geographical reasons.

I've realigned to 6 teams in 3 divisions now because as you said its easier. Moved Indy to Vegas.

That said would 162 games be suffice or is a higher amount right to accomodate 4 extra teams?

Ty in advance

I've started to play around with it using your original structure. I think that it can be done with a 162 game schedule.

The first part (the easier part) is done. I have a 162 game set up where, depending on the number of teams in the divisions, teams play 12-17 against teams in their division, six games against non-division opponents in the same sub-league, and 2-3 games against interleague opponents. Teams play interleague games against the teams in two divisions from the other sub-league. E plays E, C plays C and W plays W then each division plays one other.

I'm not sure how quickly you are looking to get this because working the schedule is going to take some time since it is so complex. I may hit a brick wall and throw my hands in the air as well.

Last question for now. Do you want an All-Star Break in mid-season?

Thank-you a million, you've been a great help

I don't think I'll hold an ASG, I've always seen them as just a pointless event.

I'm gonna crack on now setting this up. Coffee needed, stat

Don't thank me yet. This is going to be quite a puzzle. I'll see how much time I can spend on working it out.

As an update, while I have the structure set up this is going to be a bear to put together a final schedule and unfortunately I don't see that I'll have it done any time soon. I'll keep working on it as time allows because it is a very fun puzzle but my spare time is going to be quite limited for the next few weeks.

If you wanted something easier to schedule for, I'd say make it a league of 36 teams with three 6-team divisions in each league. You could then easily adapt an actual NL schedule from between 1969-92.
