Park factors in historical leagues

All these questions are based on OOTP if OOTP differs from real life.

Are the park factors calculated based on the historical stats?

Are they per year, or are they for the entire history?

If they are generated by stats, wouldn't they be affected more by the home team since they participate in all the games there? For example, if a pitching staff had a lot of ground ball pitchers, would it artificially lower the HR park factor for their home park?

When doing an inaugural draft and looking at the stats for a pitcher, would you consider in the park factors for the park they played in?

EDIT: Or would you ignore the park factors when evaluating a player's real life historical stats because the OOTP ratings are based on the players real stats (unless you choose otherwise)?

Thank you

I could be off on this, but I don't think OOTP calculates park factors. They are imported with the stadiums and usually taken from an online source. Park factors aren't simple calculation, they are based on home performance vs away performance, so they aren't skewed as you describe.

But for part 2 of my question...

If you don't base the ratings on neutralized stats (you use real stats option), then a pitcher who gives up more HR per inning would in theory always have a lower movement rating than a picher with less HR per inning, even if the first pitcher played in a HR park.

That park factors change every year. One of the DBs in the database folder contains this data. Whether or not they really should change every year, or be some sort of smoothed out average is a question I've always wondered about, but there it is.

Not sure I see how this data could tie to imported ballparks, that most people end up using. Maybe that's for historical sims?

I took the OP has being applied to historical leagues. I'm not sure what you mean by "imported ballparks". Usually that refers to the ballpark pictures, but perhaps you mean something else.

Basically, if you have a historical league that is set to automatically update things like strategies and financials (which is the default setting), it will also update park factors, every year.

Sounds about right.

Yes. The people who are really particular about this either (1) use real stats and neutralized ballpark factors (in the ballpark editor) or (2) use neut stats and historical ballpark factors. I am not all that particular about it.

Since historical stats produce ratings that are used to play the game, park factors are already included. The correct way to play historical leagues is with 1's across the board for park factors.

The obvious question is, what do you do when players are traded. I think the answer is nothing but don't quote me.

Do a search for a poster called Ankit for a better explanation than I can give.

Edit

This applies to real life stats.

I guess I call them imported parks because I used the import park function in X about 10 million times! I always thought park factors were included in the import. I know that automatically importing historic financials has no impact on parks, imported or default. I know that importing league totals does evolve default parks. I've never tried imported parks along with importing league totals.

Not ignore but set equal (1.000) for all parks because the effect of the each park factor is already included in RL stats.

OK, that's fair, but it's an item that can be confusing. When someone customizes a ballpark with ball locations, etc., and exports it for someone to import, it does come with ballpark factors. This is a problem in the game design, but putting that aside for the moment. The ballpark factors will be whatever happened to be in place for that ballpark, for that league, for whatever season was going on when the author exported that ballpark. So you are just importing that data, whether or not it's appropriate for your particular league or season. In any event, come the next season, the factors will change according the ballpark DB.

Hope I explained that OK.
