Ratings drops

Hi all. I hope some of the veterans of ootp can help me out here. i just recently downloaded ootp 8 and am currently waiting for 11(as im sure many of u are). Ive played pure sim and mogul a little bit before but it seemed too easy. So far i love ootp but have one question regarding rating drops.
first let me explain: I play w/o scouting and have noticed 2 dramatic drops in key players in two seperate leagues. First i had Carlos Pena drop from a 73(on a 20-80 scale) to a 52 in my second year. In my other league i had ryan howard drop from a 78 to to a 56(again on a 20-80 scale). IMO these are pretty dramatic. Both these players were in their late 20's as far as age(playing ootp8 so its the 07 season) so i dont understand why they would begin to decline so rapidly. also, their potentials were anywhere from 75-80. Am i doing something wrong or is this just how ootp treats some star players? i hope this isnt a common occurrence in every yr bc i wouldnt be able to deal with basically losing one of my star players every yr. Maybe this is different in ootpx but any input from the vets would be appreciated. SORRY for the loooong post but its just killing my joy!!!

Just random variation. If you look around the league you'll see some guys get better, some guys get worse, most stay roughly the same. And without recalc on for historical leagues the game engine takes over and can hit any player at any time either positively or negatively.

In the Game Setup menu you can change how often ratings change. The default is 100, I tend to play with it set at 75.
