So frustrating

I just finished a 70-year sim for my 2010 season. Basically, I want to play the 2010 season with all the history from 1940-onward simulated. Unfortunately, I didn't realize when setting up the league that it wouldn't automatically replace the reserve roster with minor leagues. Which seems like a dumb thing to happen--it really should do so!

Anyways, my frustration aside, is there any way to run a sim and not have to intervene and set up minor leagues/eliminate reserve rules? I'm resigned to re-simming...

Also--if I am forced to do it manually, how? When do I phase the reserve rule out? 1970, right? But there were minors before that, right? How does that work?

Le Grande Orange will probably be along momentarily with precise info on what changed when, but my 'rule of thumb' would be to go to an amateur draft and affiliated minor leagues when the first expansion hits, which would be either 1961 or 1962.

There's actually no real reason not to have them right from 1940, though it was only in the '60s that they only began working similarly to how they do today, and that phased in over two or three discrete adjustments. If you do decide to have them from 1940, you might want to have both affiliated and independent minors, and kill off the independents when expansion comes. Or not; your call.

Totally as an aside, I'd start a long-term sim in 1946, rather than 1940, as the economics of the game (and a lot of other things) changed radically during the war years.

Curtis--thanks for your input. What talent level would you recommend having the independent leagues at?

Also: I'm simming from 1940 because my goal is to have a league with the war years not represented in the history. I have recalc off and players not missing years like they did in RL.

That one you seriously need LGO's input on. My uneducated thought would be to group them at the A, Short Season A and Rookie levels.

In real life probably 80% of the minor league teams in this era were composed mostly/entirely of independent players, which is to say not on any MLB roster or reserve list, and never having signed a contract or received a bonus from an MLB team. Some teams, and I'm going to say they were grouped at what today would be considered the AA/AAA levels, though I'm willing to be proven wrong, were largely composed of players who were in some way, shape or form associated with MLB clubs, and some entire teams were affiliated, though the relationship was different from what we call affiliation today.

What you would be calling the A/SA/R levels would be the equivalents of what were then the A/B/C/D/E levels.

Good luck with your dynasty. I hope you don't run into any more major glitches.
