Windows 7 - Help!

So my old laptop crashed a month ago, and I had to get a new one with Windows 7. One of the first things I did was reinstall OOTPX, got the license working, got it running, made sure all my old stuff (transferred from the old laptop) was still there. It was great.

Now I've been busy, and I hadn't touched it since then. I had the baseball itch again, and I went back to it, and now it doesn't start.

When I try to run OOTP, it asks me if I want to allow the program to make changes (I say yes), then nothing happens. When I look at the task manager, I see the "ootp10.exe" process running, but there's no game.

I am running it as an administrator; I've tried running it in compatibility mode with XP; I've tried disabling "user account controls"; I got and easily installed the latest patch...but nothing works. The game won't start.

Short of unlicensing, uninstalling, and reinstalling the game...is there anything else I can do? Seems like it SHOULD work, somehow, if I can just find whatever stupid little setting I might have changed somewhere that is causing the problem.

Thanks!

Can you start the game from the Start Menu but instead of clicking OOTP10, choose the Tools folder and then "Start OOTP 10 in Trace Mode"

Then in the My Documents > OOTP Baseball 10 you should see a file called ootp.log - rename it to ootp.txt and then attach it to a reply so we can see what's happening.

There is the log...it doesn't appear to say anything, other than that nothing is happening.

I got my OOTP working again, thankfully.

I was looking at the "trouble with Vista" thread and I saw stuff about "data execution prevention." When I set it to "turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only" - BAM! OOTP worked like a charm.

Any idea if this is bad to leave the DEP on that setting all the time? I'm not quite computer-savvy enough to know exactly what I was tinkering with.

I'm glad it's working for you again. As far as DEP being good or bad . . . *sigh* there could be a 50-page thread on that topic.

Basically, it's Windows' way of trying to protect you, in particular against a series of exploits called "buffer overflows" that Windows has struggled with historically. A noble sentiment, but I'm sure plenty of people would argue about how they go about it.

If you are really curious, you can learn more about it here:

Data Execution Prevention (DEP)

Note that it is also possible configure DEP to exclude ONLY OOTP, and potentially eLicense as well. DEP seems (to me) to be a little flaky, so I'm not 100% convinced that this will also work, but in theory it's more secure for you than turning DEP off for all non-essential programs.

I don't have instructions for that handy, but I bet we can find them somewhere. Do you want to tackle that?

Steve
