Mariners keep Eric Bedard

Wow. Such icing on the cake for an excellent off season. If he comes back healthy half way through the season that is when he'll be most needed anyways.

Felix Hernandez, Cliff Lee, & healthy Erik Bedard.

Hot diggity...what a rotation if they can make the playoffs.

General manager Jack Zduriencik announced Saturday the team and the oft-injured 30-year-old agreed to a one-year contract with a mutual option for 2011.

The contract is expected to have a base salary of a fraction of the $7.75 million Bedard made last season. It includes incentive clauses, the exact value of which were not immediately known.

2009 STATS

GM 15
W 5
L 3
BB 34
K 90 (in 83 IP)
ERA 2.82

He is rehabilitating with a physical therapist in his native Canada following surgery in August to repair a torn labrum in his pitching shoulder. Last week, Mariners trainer Rick Griffin said the normal recovery time for the procedure is 10 to 12 months. That would have Bedard making his season debut in June at the earliest.
Jack Z is a freakin' baseball genius to get that deal set up like that.

Whats genius about signing an injured pitcher to a miniscule contract laden with options? Its not like he had offers piling up, right?

The Royals are looking into signing Erik Bedard, tweets Sam Mellinger of the Kansas City Star. The Royals need upcoming moves to be "payroll neutral," so the team will have to shed as much salary as it adds. Mellinger doesn't think the club is likely to sign Bedard.

The 30-year-old pitched just 83 innings last year, allowing 65 hits and 34 walks to go along with 90 strikeouts for a 2.82 ERA. Bedard hasn't had an ERA above 4.00 since 2004, but he's been slowed down by injuries.

Bedard's most often been linked to the Orioles this offseason, but earlier in the winter the Royals were reportedly pursuing the left-hander.
A lot of people wanted him to just be let go. And he's not a baseball genius for just this one move...there's been a slew of them since he took over.
