Why do I suck at this game?

Hi,

I'm in my 3rd season and my team has gotten worse each year. I must be doing something wrong.

Any basic tips on how to be a little more successful would be greatly appreciated. My team seems to hit well, but my pitchers all have E.R.A.'s in the 5's and 6's, and no matter how many runs I score, I always seem to give up a couple of more.

Thanks in advance,

TJ

It sounds like you may have some defensive problems. What are the defensive ratings of your starters?

What Andymac said. But also, remember that building a good team is a process. Getting there is part of the fun.

Pay close attention to how your minor league players are developing. Don't be afraid to take a chance on a free agent or two. Spend more money on your scouting system. Trade with other teams. And make sure you have "can't get fired" checked, so you can take as long as you want to develop your team your way.

Above all, don't be discouraged!

I suck because my prospects never develop and my veterans and free agent signies always drop in rating pricipitusly while they should be in their peak years.

You might also want to look at how many relievers you are carrying on your team. If your pitchers are regularly getting tired, they will pitch less effectively and may need more backup. Make sure that anyone in your bullpen has a role of MR or CL and not SP. Players set as starting pitchers don't prepare to throw more often than once every four or five days.

Make sure that you have a mix of left-handed and right-handed pitchers. A normal bullpen should carry two lefties.

Take a look at your ballpark to see what types of pitchers you should acquire. If your ballpark is prone to giving up a lot of homeruns, make sure that your pitchers have good Movement ratings. If your ballpark gives up a lot of hits, find pitchers with good Stuff ratings and don't worry quite as much about Control.

Do what I do when I start losing, blame it on the manager!

That's the whole point of having managers in OOTP, so that you can fire them when things go wrong and feel better about yourself.
