Myth of the Small Town Market(Pirates Dynasty)

League Structure: 2009 Historical
Starting Team: Pittsburgh Pirates

2009 Preseason:
After opening the season with 3 straight wins against the St. Louis Cardinals, the Pirates have regressed to 5-8 after 2 weeks of play.

Some highlights have been pitcher Zack Duke, who has started 2-0 with an ERA, and RF Garret Jones who has a .321 average with 3 HR and 7 RBI. Team expectations are to have a .500 season.

"This is a long term project." team manager Monkeyman576 said. "We know there are going to be bumps along the road, but we are trying to change from a culture of losing to a culture of championships."

The pirates are of to a better start than normal in recent years after posting a 21-23 record after 44 games. Pitching has been a bright spot on the Pittsburgh team, as four of their five starting pitchers have winning records. Closer Matt Capps has an ERA over 5.00 and is struggling, but has still managed 10 saves. Garrett Jones is continuing his good season on offence, hitting .303 with 8 HR and 28 RBI. Team management is considering a switch at closer positions as middle reliever Steven Jackson has an ERA under 2.50 and a WHIP around 1.20.

Although the Pirates haven't been able to hold up in the always competetive NL Central, falling to 5 games below .500, they did receive good news when 3 players, 1B Adam LaRoche, CF Nate McLouth, and RF Garrett Jones, were all named to the all star game. This is the first time in several years that the pirates have had more than one selection to the team.

"While team accomplishments are always stressed here, I also think it's important for the guys to set individual goals as well. I want our guys to know we want them to succeed in baseball and in life, and getting selected to the all star game is a great achievment for all three guys." Manager Monkeyman576 said in a press release.

1B Adam LaRoche - .317/.389/.348/13 HR/64 RBI
CF Nate McLouth - .324/.423/.572/12/41
RF Garrett Jones - .295/.355/.478/15/56

2B Freddy Sanchez(not listening to offers)
SS Ramon Vasquez(not listening to offers)
SS Jack Wilson(not listening to offers)

While Adam LaRoche has been a steady performer in the last 3 seasons, he has reached his potential, and I'm not sure it's worth giving $16M per year to a 25-30HR, .270, 90 RBI hitter. I'm sure there are better offeres available on the free agent market.

The Pirates were 3-9 in arbitration hearings.
