League Stories

Hey all,

I am curious as to what sort of stories your leagues have within them. By that I mean rivalries, dynasties, superstar players, etc. Personally, I am more interested in the goings-on of teams than individual players, as I have always found team identities and the like more to my liking.

Anyways, what sort of stories do your leagues have?

In my main league, 1 guy named Lee Meridith has led the league in career hits, home runs, RBI, walks, VORP and runs for over 60 years (the league has gome on for 108 seasons). As far as teams go, the team that I control (the Detroit Gannets) made the playoffs 17 times between 1931-1950 and won 2 championships. They made the playoffs just 16 times in the next 50 years (as a big market team) and won 2 championships (they were consecutive). I took over the team in 2010 and in my 7 year reign with the team we've made the playoffs 6 times, so I'm hoping to resurrect one of the greatest teams in league history and help the fans forget about the 2000-2009 decade (no playoff appearances).

I'm not entirely sure if you're referring to "in-game stories" (e.g. statistical developments of note) or "out-of-game stories" (e.g. fictional storylines created by the people who participate in the league). If it's the latter, give the PEBA News Archive a browse. You'll find storylines galore.

The latest involves the investigation of Julian Nizinski, Private Investigator into possible mob ties for Michael Czosnyka, new GM of the New Jersey Hitmen. My understanding is that this is to be the first part of a continuing series.

While out-of-game storylines are interesting, that is not what I mean (it's a little too WWE for me). Basically, I am talking about big rivalries between teams, dynastic teams, historically terrible teams (and their unexpected triumph in a year), etc.

In my league which has had 21 seasons so far, I have a team called the Cleveland Captains, they never made the playoffs in the history of the team/league (they were a charter franchise). The team had a great 3-4 year period a few seasons ago when they won more then 85 games each year and twice won over 90, but as if God himself hates the team the division they played in during that period was by far the most insanely tough division I have ever seen. One year they finished with 93 wins, were in third place that year, and 14 games back. 93 wins and in THIRD!!!
And that is with an unbalanced schedule!

The poor poor Captains.

I hear that. There's a team in my league called the Chicago Indians. This team, despite its huge market, tends to stick with young, quality, cheap players that it has developed through its farm system, as well as through trades with big spending teams. They have established themselves over the period of my league as one of the better, almost elite teams.

However, what keeps them from attaining elite status is their inability to make it to the postseason. This is no fault of their own, but rather my playoff eligibility requirements, which allows only the four division winners of each sub league to move on. They happen to be in a four team division with the Baltimore Emperors, the Yankees of my league.

Three years in a row, the Indians have finished three games or less back at the end of the season, yet they have been in the top three in winning percentage of the sixteen teams in the sub league each season. They have made the playoffs just twice in the fifteen year history of the league, with the Emperors winning the division eleven other times.

That division has churned out seven Presidential League Championships (the main championship), but none from Chicago. If only they were in a different division, and did not have to play the Emperors thirty times a year, they would probably have at least a few PL Championship appearances under their belt.

Maybe they will eventually just give up on development and go free agent crazy.

I only allow division winners in the playoffs as well, which has hurt Cleveland bad. They have fallen into a period of horrible baseball now and I wonder if they will ever win a division title.

I don't have a Yankees like team in my league, I have had a couple of dynasties though, the New York Titans won 3 titles in the first 4 years of my league but have only won 1 since and that was 9 years after the others. I also had the Houston Toros win 3 titles in 4 years. My most consistent team is the Los Angeles Dragons, they have been in the World Series 8 times intermittently throughout my league's history but only won twice.

In my NHL dynasty, I have simulated from the year 1901 to 2036. The Hartford Whalers dominated the first century, winning 21 Stanley Cups by the year 2001. However, in the past 35 years, they have failed to even reach the Finals. From 1989 through 1995, the Nashville Predators won seven straight Stanley Cups. Then in the early 2000's, the Colorado Avalanche and Ottawa Senators won a few titles. From 2015 through 2030, Ottawa won 15 of 16 Stanley Cups, including 14 in a row. Ottawa is now tied with Hartford for the most titles with 21.

The worst teams? Detroit and Dallas. In 136 years, both teams have have won a grand total of 0 Stanley Cups. Zero. And the Washington Capitals, who won in 1902, haven't won since. Another team that has been struggling for a long time is the Boston Bruins. They won in the inaugural year of the league, 1901, and also in 1920. They are still looking for a third championship.

The Anaheim Ducks had won 3 titles in 4 years (1911, 1913, 1914). They went 96 years before winning another one (2010).

The Calgary Flames have only 1 title (1956) and have not made the playoffs since the year 2000.

In your world, Detroit must be empty, considering how the Tigers and Pistons always blow it, and you don't even want me starting on the Lions.

If you're asking me for my story, I tell tales of a patch who i saw in a dream, and am waiting for it to save me from my spell (of boredom).
