"OOTP has stopped working"

Running v10.2.16 since the patch came out without issues. Game froze today during messages, then the BSOD and restart. Since then after saved game loads to 100% it goes gray with the "OOTP has stopped working" message. Tried to start new game and same thing happens. Tried to uninstall and reinstall new from the website without any luck. Running Vista Home Premium. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, the section in the support section of the game actually worked. Follow this thread if you have the same issue, it solved it for me.

Does this mean that I've got a bad section on my hard drive?!?

That's conceivable. But more than likely it's just a registry issue and that step neatly bypasses said issue by redoing the keys in a way that is more Vista-friendly.

Run a drive integrity check just to be sure, and make sure that you scan for/attempt to recover bad sectors (this will require a restart and take some time). I suggest doing this regardless of problems about once every other month - more often if you've been having suspicious problems. If you have a growing amount of bad sectors, change your hard drive immediately as failure is imminent.

If, on the other hand, you're fine and feel like messing with the guts of your OS, a reinstall of the operating system will solve most registry issues. It will also take forever and a day to complete (officially, Vista does not support a repair reinstall, unofficially you can do an upgrade install as long as you have the installation disc and it's of the same service pack - if you have one but it's pre-sp2 or pre sp1, you'd need to uninstall service packs until they're the same version).*

* - this is <NOT> a suggestion as it doesn't always work and often causes more problems than it fixes, just letting you know it can be done. I would actually just use the workaround.
