How to handle Carlos Marmol: Or, how to utilize your top MR
He will not be my closer as Gregg expects that role and has shown in the past he can do the job. Plus his salary fits the role much better ha.
Anyway, Marmol is lights out my best reliever...hell, best pitcher by a mile on the Cubs (online league). I'm a believer in having a guy who knows the closer role handle that job, so I'm fine with Gregg in that spot. However, I want to use Marmol in the really tight situations as he can get K's like none other. If there isn't an immediate threat, aka no one on base but we're winning by 1-3, I'd like him to come in as the setup guy to start the 8th. I was thinking of putting him as my setup guy but also my #1 MR. How will the game handle this? Is there a best practices approach to something like this for OOTP?

I'd make him my #1 setup guy only as that spot along with closer seem to log the most IP. In my experience, as it only took me once to learn from a mistake i personally won't repeat, i would not use him as #1 reliever and #1 setup man. In my case overwork=injury

With Marmol I'd be willing to take that chance of injury. Would he receive an absorbent amount of innings? Would the manager know he was tired and not use him?

All i have to go with is the outcome= injury. Can't say the game threw him under the bus when he was tired being in both spots, but he was used more often than he should have been playing both roles. You can do well using 4 mid's, one setup(Marmol) and a closer. That's my common practice, and it works.
FWIW my boy was a 10-10-9, and i pee'd my pants thinking i had it covered until the injury hit. He's an 8-9-8 now as my #1 setup without so much as a bruise in 3 years. Of course it's all a chance we take

I think a lot of people would like to see some improvements in the way the AI handles relievers. I know I would.
In the on-line league in which I participate, I had my best reliever in the first setup spot only. He didn't pitch a single inning last week even though he was rested, watching from the sidelines as we took a 2 run lead into the 7th as lesser relievers frittered it away. Another game he watched was tied from the 5th through the 9th and the same lesser relievers (listed as MR in the pitching setup) lost the game by giving up 3 in the 10th. I suspect that it may be best to put your best reliever in the first MR spot. |

What if you just ignore the SU position entirely?

I routinely put my best reliever as my closer in modern day leagues. In older leagues, he is my first MR and my first setup man, with my second best guy being the closer.
