Scruffy Davis GM extraordinaire

So basically i got bored running my solo league. It was easy staying competitive when having complete control of everything. I found myself enjoying more and more the hustle and bustle of the offseason compared to the actual on field goings. So I've decided to create a dynasty where my character is GM only. The lineups, depth charts, playing time... all that will be handled by the manager I hire. I will handle the broader GM tasks only and then see what happens. It should be a little more challenging and should allow me to zip through seasons a little quicker, slowing down only to deal with injuries and trades. The first few posts will be a breakdown of my current team and staff and minor leagues. After that I will post interesting tid bits throughout the seasons as they go by and of course all the off season business.

The setting:

I took a 2009 standard major league game with real rosters and simmed one season. At that point I had an expansion and retooled the minors. There are now 16 teams in each league. 4 divisions and 4 teams per division. No interleague and no more wildcards. Division winners are the only ones in the playoffs. Each Major League team has 4 minor league affiliates. 1 at AAA, 1 AA, 1 A, and 1 rookie squad. The draft has been reduced to 20 rounds and I created 2 feeder leagues (1 college and 1 high school) to provide the bulk of players to my drafts. With this setup I simmed ahead to the year 2018 pausing along the way to ensure my league totals weren't getting outrageous. (I should add here that i am taking over the team just after the draft has happened) Everything was good to go so i dug around the history to find a lowly franchise to take over. Lowe and behold my beloved Brewers have been struggling as usual so i picked them. Overall ratings for players listed as stars. Current ratings disabled with Talent ratings shown on the 20 - 80 scale. This will provide realism and difficulty. I still get to see what my scout thinks the player will look like fully developed but that doesn't mean my scout is right or that the player will ever reach it. I will have to use stats when looking to promote/demote players as well as when signing free agents, etc. The breakdown of my staff will follow.

Staff:

Head Coach - Keiichi Yabu

Former Giants pitcher that turned to coaching when his career was over. Absolutely excellent when handling players, veterans and rookies alike, and overall a great grasp of how the game should be played. Comes with only 1 year of experience though.

Bench Coach - Ron Gant

Another familiar baseball name and should provide excellent council to the head coach.

Hitting Coach - Buddy Biancalana

The oldest of my coaches and yet the most inexperienced. Sure knows what hes talking about when it comes to hitting though and he knows how to make the players listen.

Pitching Coach - Troy Archibald

The most experienced of my coaches and oddly the coach with the lowest ratings on my staff. Hopefully his experience will overcome this.

Team Trainer - Roberto German

Overall an average team trainer that specializes in player fatigue recovery. I'll be counting on him to keep my stars healthy and to get them playing as much as possible.

Head Scout - Fransisco Fernandez

The most highly paid member of my staff. I'll be counting on his advice when looking at my players.

The breakdown of my current team will follow.

Pitching Staff:

Starting rotation

Dan Hayes - Undoubtedly my staff ace. Just turned 26 years old. Was originally a 5th round pick by the Brewers in the 2014 draft. Immediately joined the Helena Brewers and helped them win the 2014 championship in the Pioneer league. Named the #6 prospect in all of baseball in 2016 and helped AAA class Wisconsin Timber Rattlers win the 2016 championship in the International League. Currently carries a 7 -3 record with a 4.35 ERA.

Johnny Cueto - A solid number 2 on my staff. 32 years old and in the final year of his contract. Time will tell if he perhaps gets moved come trade deadline time.

Adys Portillo - According to the scouts this guy shouldn't even be in the big leagues but at 26 years of age his 4 - 5 record and 4.89 era tell me he has earned a spot. Definitely not my choice as a number 3 but not too bad.

Armando Galarraga - 36 year old vet with a 6.99 ERA and in the final year of his contract. Unless he has a drastic turnaround he won't be suiting up for the Brew Crew next year.

Alfredo Frey - a 27 year old that should still be in the minors but due to injury is the 5th starter on my staff. His ERA at an even 6 and his 1 - 2 record leave me with immediate decisions to make for my starting staff. If I decide its blow up time expect some big changes in the rotation.

Noteworthy -

32 year old fan favorite Wade Davis is currently on the DL with a herniated disc. He will only be out 2 more weeks. Before heading to the DL he compiled a 7 - 6 record and had a stellar 2.80 ERA. He will find his way back into the rotation soon.

Bullpen info in the next post.

Bullpen:

Closer

Joe Corbett - This 26 year old lefty has quickly become one of the leagues best closers. He currently sports a 1.63 ERA and 19 saves in 20 chances. He (like ace Dan Hayes) was a 5th round pick by the Brewers that developed in system.

Setup guys

Ricardo Ramirez - This 28 year old righty has become a very reliable option out of the pen. Currently he checks in with even 3.00 ERA and 23 Ks in 26 innings pitched.

Jorge Hernandez - This 27 year old lefty is challenging for the closing spot. He has a 1.23 ERA and throws anywhere between 96 and 98 mph.

Mid relief staff

Juan Ricardo, Anthony Franklin, Brian Wilson, and Millard Wiggins make up the rest of the bullpen. All have pretty poor ERAs so these are names you might not see in a Brewer uniform anymore.

Overall I'm not very content where are pitching staff is at. We have a few key pieces in the back end of the bullpen and a decent set of 3 starters but we need some depth here. At first glance there is nobody in the minors who will be challenging for a spot anytime soon so this will be a key starting point come trade talks.

Starting position players in next post.

Catcher Larry Carter - Struggled a bit last year in his rookie season batting only .243 but his sophomore campaign is going quite well. He is currently at a .310 avg with an OPS of .820. This 25 year old catcher is here to stay.

First Baseman Joe Cook - Like Carter he struggled last year in his rookie year batting only .237 but unlike Carter he is still struggling. Currently sitting at a .240 avg in nearly 200 at bats. Only 27 years old so he might have a longer leash than if he were older but his numbers need to see some improvement or we will be shopping for a new first baseman.

Second Baseman Jason King - Another sophomore that struggled last year and has shown some improvement this year. Absolutely excellent defensively which should keep him around for the time being. Currently sitting at a .275 avg in nearly 200 at bats.

Third Baseman Fransisco Rangel - Yet another sophomore having a strong campaign this year. Excellent defense and a solid .286 avg should keep this guy in a Brewer uniform for a few years.

Shortstop Will Middlebrooks - A 29 year old veteran with a very nice .295 avg and quite excellent defense. He may be a trade piece come trade deadline if we have a firesale.

Left Fielder Keith Smith - This 25 year old former 1st round draft pick has already been in the big leagues for 5 years. Easily the most feared bat in the lineup he currently is hitting at a .341 pace with an OPS near 1000.

Center Fielder - My team currently has no center fielder. This needs immediate attention as center field is a vital defensive position.

Right Fielder Drew Watson - Fresh of the DL has very few at bats this season but based off previous years he is a dangerous bat.

Overall my outfield is very potent at the plate and yet weak defensively. My infield has some very fine defensive athletes yet very inconsistent at the plate. I will need to balance this out and I currently lack the big power bat to hit in the 4 hole. The team leader only has 11 homeruns and 45 rbi.

Bench players coming up

Bench players

1B/3B Mat Gamel - This former All Star has spent his entire big league career with Milwaukee but his performance has really fallen off. At 32 he is nothing more than a role player and a weak one at that. His 15 million dollar contract will be near impossible to move but hes in his last year and its doubtful we will resign him.

2B/SS Ed Brown - This 29 year old just never really developed. Currently he is a right handed bat off the bench but his recent low production has me leaning toward sending this guy on his way.

OFs Jon Jay, John Texeira, and Gary Lucas all have very low averages (below .200!) and none are adept enough defensively to handle centerfield so these players won't be in a Brewer uniform much longer.

After digging through my major league roster I am simply amazed we currently have a winning record. At 37 - 33 we are still last place in the division however so the word of the day is firesale. I need to inject some talent into my farm system and play for tomorrow.

From here on out my posts will consist of news stories and the occasional first person perspective from the GM. The goal is to get back to some winning ways in 3 years or less.

Scruffy Davis hired as GM
New GM provides a breath of fresh air in Milwaukee

Milwaukee, WI. - After finishing in the cellar last year and with no progress being currently made, the Brewers have turned over a new leaf hiring Scruffy Davis to be the new GM.
Davis, 39, hails from Melbourne, Australia a place which is not normally known for its baseball talent. After quickly falling out of the minors he is taking a shot at being a front office man.
" I am very grateful to the owner of the Brewers and to the city of Milwaukee for a chance to turn this club around. We have some talent at some key positions and with some hard work from the coaching staff and clear look ahead the future seems very bright for this club."
Trade rumors abound as the new GM seems set on making his mark quickly.

Major trade with Arizona
New GM makes quick impact

Milwaukee, WI. - Less than 24 hours after being named the new GM, Scruffy Davis made a startling quick deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The trade sends 22-year-old minor league center fielder António Costa, 33-year-old left fielder Jon Jay, 26-year-old right fielder Garry Lucas, 36-year-old reliever Brian Wilson, 21-year-old minor league first baseman Albert Santos, 29-year-old second baseman Ed Brown, 36-year-old minor league left fielder Jason Kubel and 27-year-old left fielder Gabriel Ramos to Arizona for 24-year-old center fielder António Ramos and 20-year-old minor league starting pitcher Jon Harris.
With the exception of Costa and Santos the deal rids the Brewers of a bit of salary and some aging players and nets one of the best young center fielders in Ramos and a can't miss starting pitching prospect in Harris. Harris has been assigned to the Brewers Single A affiliate while Ramos is expected to join the club later this evening. Ramos currently has a .341 avg along with 5 homeruns and 24 rbis.

"Uh you wanted to see me sir?"

"Ah yes come in. Have a seat Yab. I just wanted to have a little face to face time to see how the boys are doing."

"Well sir it has been quite a hectic couple of days. What with the big trade going down and the new guys coming up from AAA. The new guys are still trying to fit in and of course trying to adjust to big league ball."

"I kind of figured that would happen. But even before I was officially in charge here in Milwaukee I had my eye on Ramos. That kid is going to be something special. He was tearing the cover off the ball when we got him. How are he and the new guys faring so far?"

"Well Ramos has been struggling a bit. Hes gotten a few hits but he hasn't really found his groove batting lead off for us. The center fielder you called up, Robinson, doesn't have a hit yet at all. But that second baseman you brought up has been fantastic. Mun they call him. Hes been doing so well that we actually have him in the starting lineup now."

"Right Han-Lee Mun. I made a call to Jeff Isom the manager of our Triple A affiliate up in Appleton. I told him we needed a middle infielder to come off the bench for us and he told me about Mun. I didn't really see him as a starter up here but if hes producing like you say then by all means start him. I'm not about to step on your toes and tell you how to manage. Well I've got another meeting to head to. Keep plugging away and I'll try to get a meeting like this scheduled every month or so. Make sure you come prepared with a report on how our team is doing. Take care Yab."

"You do the same sir."

Brewers and Dodgers make deal
Small trade could have large impact in the future

Milwaukee, WI. - In what can only be described as a minor move the Brewers sent 3 minor leaguers to the Dodgers in exchange for 24 year old power hitting prospect Ramon Fernandez. Milwaukee's GM Davis could not be reached for direct comment but sources close to the negotiations say the deal was quick and painless and should work out well for both sides.
In other Brewers news, starting pitcher Wade Davis is set to return from his 8 week DL stint. Davis currently holds a team best 2.80 ERA. Davis could start as early as tonight against the Florida Marlins.

All-Star Roster features 4 Brewers
Strugggling team features a few great talents

Milwaukee, WI. - The annual All-Star game is set to take place on July 10. This year it will feature 4 Brewers. Closer Joe Corbett, LF Keith Smith, 3B Francisco Rangel and recently aquired CF Antonio Ramos. This is the first time Ramos has been selected to the All-Star team and it is something he is not taking for granted.
"Being selected to the All-Star team is a great honor. It makes me strive even harder to play at my best. I'm going to try and take in as much of the experience as I can."

Thanks. I'm enjoying the off the field approach so far. It can be very frustrating though. Why o why does my manager insist on a CF platoon when i brought in a All Star centerfielder? haha.

Smith Out
Injury hits Milwaukee left fielder

Milwaukee, WI. - Milwaukee left fielder Keith Smith left today's game with a sprained ankle. The injury looked like it occurred making a defensive play in the game against Cincinnati. One fan said, "As soon as it happened, you could tell something was wrong." The injury will likely leave the Brewers without Smith for about 3 weeks.
Smith is hitting .316 this season with 9 home runs, 53 RBIs and 58 runs scored. He has 100 hits in 316 at-bats.
Smith will head to the 15 day disabled list. A corresponding roster move has not been announced as of yet.
