Rule 5 returning player question / issue

The scenario here is I traded to get back a player I lost in the rule 5 draft. Yes, I took on his minimum major league contract, but I assumed since he was returning to the original team, I would be able to now demote him to AAA. It is telling me he must be in the majors or on the DL. Shouldn't I somehow be allowed to return him to his original team (mine) or something so that I can now demote him?

No, the Rule 5 designation applies to that player that entire season, even if traded. The responsibility transfers to the new team.

As this is the way Rule 5 is supposed to work, I'll close this thread for housekeeping purposes.
