Kansas City Royals: Return of the King (OOTP10)

Twenty-three years. Lots of things have happened in twenty-three years. One thing that hasn't happened though is a playoff appearance for the Kansas City Royals. 1985 was the last time they made the postseason, and in that postseason they defeated cross-state rivals the St. Louis Cardinals to win their first and only World Series crown.

The 2009 Kansas City Royals come into the season looking to snap that streak before it reaches twenty-four seasons. That charge will be lead by the ace of the Royals pitching staff, Zack Greinke (13-10, 3.47 ERA). Greinke showed that he could be a very good pitcher for the Royals and live up to his All-Star potential he has showed for years. Gil Meche (14-11, 3.98 ERA) will also pitch in as a proven arm in the rotation, but the back end of the rotation has many questions.

One part of the team without questions is the 8th and 9th innings. Kyle Farnsworth (2-3, 1 SV, 4.48 ERA) will be the primary setup reliever for one of the premier closers in baseball, Joakim Soria (2-3, 42 SV, 1.60 ERA). If the Royals have a lead with Soria coming into the game, you can almost surely put it in the win column.

The Royals are lead on the offensive side by their corner infielders, third baseman Alex Gordon (.260, 16 HR, 59 RBI, 19 SB) and first baseman Billy Butler (.275, 11 HR, 55 RBI). Both of these men are very young and are primed for breakout seasons. A big bat was added in the offseason when the Royals picked up their new designated hitter, Mike Jacobs (.247, 32 HR, 93 RBI). Jacobs will provide some power that wasn't there last season.

The Royals have been down for many seasons, but with an infusion of young talent, this could be the year that the Royals start to turn the corner. Make sure you are tuned in this year to Royals baseball, it's going to be a fun ride.

April 5, 2009 - Baseball America has named their top prospects for the 2009 season, and in no great surprise Orioles catcher Matt Wieters has been named the top prospect in Major League Baseball. Although Wieters has never had a major league at-bat, many are predicting he will be one of the top catchers in all of baseball.

In the same report Baseball America announced that the top pitcher in all of baseball is Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher David Price. Price made his name in the postseason for the Rays last season and looked very impressive. Many think he will have a great season pitching in the rotation of the defending American League champions.

The following Kansas City Royals prospects made the Top 100 list:

41. 3B Mike Moustakas (A)
49. SP Daniel Cortes (AA)
56. 1B Eric Hosmer (A)
76. SP Mike Montgomery (R)

Kyle Davies (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Gavin Floyd (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

White Sox Top Five Players

CL Bobby Jenks (0-0, 0 SV, 0.00 ERA)

OK, this should be terrific!

Do you plan on increasing ticket prices, and maybe springing for more talent?

Personally, if you have zero chance to compete over the next 5 years, then I would trade Greinke for a butt-load of high-value prospects.

I really don't think I'm going to have to rebuild all that much with them. They've got some good young talent like Greinke, Butler, Soria and Gordon I can build around. Plus they've got some pretty good prospects that'll come up, like Moustakas and Hosmer. I doubt I'll light the world on fire in year one, but I should be able to set a solid base with them without giving up all the talent I do have.

I know in our online league, the Phillies traded 5 specs for Greinke.

I will say that the value of a stud starter is under rated.

Consider the following:

You have a BRILLIANT starter, who goes 25-7.

Your #2 starter goes 18-10.

Between the two of them, they are 43-17, with 102 other games to account for.

IF the remainder of the pitching staff goes .500, then you win 94 games.

Yeah...it's like that!

If you have a pitcher go 25-7, and EVERYBODY else goes .500, then you STILL win 90 games!

April 8, 2009 - The first major injury of the year has occurred, and the victim is Cincinnati Reds closer Francisco Cordero (0-0, 0.00 ERA). Cordero took a line drive off of his arm and has suffered a fractured elbow. He is expected to miss 6 months of action.

----------

Roy Halladay's (1-0, 0.00 ERA) first start of the season was a very successful one. The Blue Jays ace threw a complete game shutout against the Detroit Tigers. Halladay only gave up three hits while he struck out six batters.

April 10, 2009 - The Giants took a chance on Randy Johnson (0-0, 9.00 ERA) for this season, and that chance has come back to bite them as Johnson has gone down with an injury. Johnson was covering first base when he collided with the base runner and suffered a broken fibula. He is expected to miss around three months.

----------

A fight of epic proportions took place on the field last night during the Rangers-Indians game. Indians reliever Jensen Lewis (0-0, 2.70 ERA) came up and in on Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler (.182, 0 HR, 0 RBI). Kinsler didn't like that one bit and charged the mound. Their teammates tried breaking them up, but they couldn't before a few punches were landed, and because of those landed punches each man landed a 9-game suspension.

April 11, 2009 - The Royals suffered their first injury of the season, but luckily for them it wasn't a major one. Jamey Wright (0-0, 0.00 ERA) questioned if he was ready coming out of spring training, and after one batter he was taken out of the game with a sore elbow. As a precaution the Royals placed him on the 15-day disabled list and he will be ready to go right away after that. Sidney Ponson (0-0, 3.18 ERA) will likely get a couple of starts while Wright is on the DL.

----------

With Wright going on the DL, the Royals have called up their closer from their Triple A team, Heath Phillips (1-0, 0.00 in AAA). Phillips will provide an extra arm in the bullpen since Ponson will be called on to start a few games.

----------

Paul Konerko (.286, 2 HR, 3 RBI) hit a milestone last night when he went deep against the Minnesota Twins to give him his 300th career home run.

The Houston Astros suffered a big loss to their outfield today when Hunter Pence (.188, 1 HR, 1 RBI) suffered a fractured ankle while landing awkwardly after going up in the air to try to catch a ball. He is expected to miss 4-5 months of action.

----------

Jermaine Dye (.313, 2 HR, 7 RBI) made history when he became the second White Sox player in as many days to crank out his 300th home run of his career. Dye shows no signs of slowing down and could add a considerable number of home runs to that total.

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher James Shields (2-0, 0.53 ERA) spun a gem last night for the defending American League champions. Shields was able to go the distance, only giving up 1 hit and 2 walks, while he struck out 10 batters. This has been the best performance of the young season. Shields looks to carry the Rays rotation to the success they saw last season.

April 17, 2009 - Chris Young (.313, 3 HR, 10 RBI) has been on fire this first week and a half of the season. But that came to a screeching halt when he dove for a ball last night and landed awkwardly on his knee, resulting on a broken kneecap. Young is expected to miss 4-5 months.
