Once Upon a Time
This will be where I just keep several stories, pennant races, league leaders and notes along the way of my simulation fictional league from it's inception in 1900. Pretty just for me to have as an account of different things that have happened. But feel free to read through.
140 games a season (for now) 21 players on roster 25 players on reserve roster No foreigners allowed (for now) Whites only (for now) 10 years minimum service for free agency (for now) American League Boston Red Sox New York Yankees St. Louis Browns Chicago White Sox Cleveland Indians Detroit Tigers Washington Senators Philadelphia Athletics National League Philadelphia Phillies Pittsburgh Pirates St. Louis Cardinals Boston Braves Brooklyn Dodgers New York Giants Chicago Cubs Cincinnati Reds Things will follow a somewhat basic guideline slightly similar to the real MLB. Things like when blacks enter and when teams moved and entered the league (although this may be played with a bit I love the Dodgers in Brooklyn). Last edited by hfield007; 07-11-2009 at 03:37 PM. |

April 1900 Story Log
April 6, New York - Diamond veteran, Ken Young, made history in the first Senators game by hitting the first homerun in Major League history. The 32 year old left fielder made the game deciding bomb early in the top of the 7th against Yankee southpaw, Dirk Patnode. Patnode's relief appearance earns him and the Yankees a 0-1 start to the young season. April 9, Boston - 32 year old veteran, Dave Holbert, had a spectacular day Monday with a 5 RBI afternoon, including a 3 run 9th inning homerun that gave his Pirates the lead. Holbert was joined by teammate catcher, Al Wilson, who had a 5 hit day over the Braves shakey pitching. Boston trails the NL in 7th place now at 1-3. April 11, New York - The Detroit Tigers (6-1) suffered their first defeat this year while on the road against the New York Yankees. Catcher John Heim's third inning single hit pitcher Thad Jefferson home for the only run of the contest. Jefferson also stuck around long enough to get the Yankees first win, complete game, and shutout this year. This leaves the Chicago White Sox (0-6) as the only winless team thus far. April 14, New York - 'Ghost Runner' Paul Dunham has been anything but stoppable this April for the Giants. The truly giant Giant is batting .435 with a hit in all 8 games this season and as of today has captured four 3 hit contests. The natural lefty is dispensing hits and headaches for opposing pitching staffs and shows no signs of stoppage. His Giants currently sit atop the National League at 6-2. April 19, Cincinnati - The worst team in the National league just got worse as star outfielder, Jim Barnes, was put on the disabled list due to recurring back spasms. He is estimated to return in about a month but the struggling Reds have little chance to keep in the race without the man batting .400 to drive them. April 30, Philadelphia - Recent AL player of the week, Wilford LeMaster, has given his Athletics plenty to smile about this year. He currently leads the league with a .426 average and holds tight atop total bases with 50. The Ohio native has been one of the few bright spots for an Athletic team that is dead last in most pitching categories and average at best in batting. Opposing AL scouts however have called LeMaster's start nothing short of a fluke and that his numbers should dip to a low .300 by midseason. Last edited by hfield007; 07-11-2009 at 03:38 PM. |

May 1900 Story Log
May 1, Boston - Brian Newman's fastball continues to wreak havock on batters as the 3-3 righty ups his league leading strikeout total to 30. His win total has been hurt by lack of run support as his 3 wins came as a result of only 3 opposing runs to beat. In his last 6 starts only once did the batters manage more than 3 runs. Newman has pitched 2 shutouts this season and looks to clinch a spot in the first all-star game. May 2, Pittsburgh - The Pirates extended their NL lead as they faced second place Philadelphia on Wednesday. The Pirates Ernest Lukens earned his 4th win this year despite his 4.02 ERA. Run support has been key in Pittsburgh's victories as was shown in this 12-9 run fest. Philadelphia managed hits from every batter but fell short despite a late 4 run 7th inning attempt to tie it up. Philly may chalk this one up to unfortunate scheduling as pitcher Matt Robinson was the one called to the mound in this important matchup. Robinson's 1-6 record and 4.81 ERA all but gave the game to the hungry Pirates. May 6, Washington - Cleveland took 2 of 3 against Washington after this 3-0 shutout Sunday afternoon. The decisive game gives the Indians a 2 game lead over the Senators. Leading the effort is Curt Shipe. The second baseman was injured earlier in the year but has since returned and hit safely in all 14 games he played in so far. This loss for the Senators came at the expense of pitching ace Michael Allen who falls to 6-2. His 1.37 ERA still is third in the Majors. May 12, St. Louis - RHP Martin Van Zandt got his first shutout of the season as the Tigers defeated the Brows 3-0. Van Zandt's efforts could help catapult the Tigers to .500 as they sit a half game under. May 14, New York - The first firing of the season came today as the 7th place Giants fired manager Carlos Gonzales. The Giants GM was not available for a comment but it could be attributed to his lack of concentration on the pitching aspect of the game. While the Giants sit first in the NL in most batting cetegories their pitching staff has been picked apart and shows no signs of improvements since the opener. May 16, - The league's first year player draft pool has been revealed and all eligible players have been announced. Among the top choices in the pool are catcher Ron Wilson, third baseman John Hall, RHP Ellsworth Bright, and LHP Jimmy McFarland. May 21, New York - Paul Dunham hits headlines again this week with his second NL player of the week this year. The award is well deserved to say the least. His 14 hits this week put his average just at .400 again and his 23 doubles on the year is leading the Majors. The slugger looks to become the first MVP in league history. May 25, St. Louis - The Indians week long struggle continues as the Browns have given the first place team a couple losses. Meanwhile second place Senators move within a game of the Tribe as they battle last place New York. May 28, New York - The Ghost Runner Paul Dunham hits headlines yet again this week with his second consecutive win at NL player of the week. With 15 hits this week, 5 of them doubles, Dunham improves his average to .409 and the Giants have won 5 of 8. May 30, Brooklyn - A battle of champions in the NL took place Wednesday as the third game of a three game series would decide the division leader. Two 30-22 teams duked it out after splitting the first two games. Brooklyn entered the series on top but Chicago's Dave Wood put up a 9 inning, 3 hit shutout that put the Dodgers to sleep. Lucky for the dodgers they start a three game series against the 7th place Cardinals tomorrow. |

June 1900 Story League
June 4, New York - Paul Dunham managed his third straight player of the week award. The Ghost Runner is making a huge splash in the NL with a .420 average and 35 extra base hits so far. He is a shoo in for the all star game later this month. June 10, Boston - The Red Sox won the battle of second place teams against the Indians. The win propelled the Bosox into a tie with the Senators for League lead. The win came despite a great effort by second baseman Curt Shipe who led the Tribe with 3 hits. 1900 First Year Player Draft 1. New York Yankees - RHP - Bob Christensen 2. New York Giants - 3B - John Hall 3. St. Louis Cardinals - RHP - Harvey Smith 4. Philadelphia Athletics - LF - Kent Martin 5. Cincinnati Reds - LHP - Jimmy McFarland June 19, Boston - Braves outfielder, Christopher Schneider, suffered another setback with his fractured finger. Despite his .324 average this year the 38 year old from California may call it quits soon enough. June 20, Brooklyn - Jim Hedrick is taking the league by storm. The 30 year old starting pitcher has recorded two complete game shutouts in his first two starts of his career. These two amazing starts come after some mediocre bullpen work. June 26, - All Star Game won by NL 10-3. Had 10-0 heading into the 9th. June 30, Philadelphia - Wilford LeMaster put up another great month taking his third straight Rookie of the month award. Currently batting .329, the 21 year old is living up to his potential. |

July 1900 Story Log
July 4, Washington - Wahington's Ken Young managed to have a great 4th of July with his league leading 6th homerun heading up a 10-4 win against the Indians. A crucial series for the Senators as the Red Sox are closing in. July 6, Washington - Washington just finished up a three game series against Cleveland at home. It proved to be a great series knocking the incoming number three team twice while trying to hold onto the American League. However this is proving hard as Boston just finished a three game sweep of the Athletics to tie the Senators. July 14, Philadelphia - The Senators made quick work of the Athletics sweeping them in a 4 game series and adding on to their 6 game winning streak. The winning streak propels them 3 games ahead of the rival Red Sox. July 24, Boston - The Red Sox have been absolutely lethal since losing ground to the Senators a couple weeks ago and have regained the top spot with Washington. Winning 7 of their last 9 games Boston looks to keep the race tight. July 31, Pittsburgh - Bad news for the Pirates as one of their top players, Dave Holbert, will most likely miss the remainder of the season due to a hamstring injury. The Pirates are currently 6 games back and this could potentially end their year. |

August 1900 Story Log
August 1, Washington - The Senators pennant dreams slip further each day as their recent skid has all but given the Red Sox the gold. It's getting later in the year and it will be harder for teams to make losses up, especially for a Senator team that's lost 9 of 12. August 9, Detroit - The Senators flew back into the race this month with a 7 of 8 game slashing including two wins against the Red Sox and a 4 game sweep of the Tigers this week. Pitchers Rich Vernon and Michael Allen have combined for 31 wins this year and are dominating the opposition lately. August 18, Chicago - The Cubs have trailed the Dodgers for some time now losing 11 of 12 at the start of August. But their recent 3 game winning streak coupled with the Dodgers skid as of this week have given them new life. With two weeks left the Cubs and Dodgers continue the tight race. |

World Series 1900 Log
Game 1 - Washington began the series at home. Rich Vernon battled Dave Wood in a great pitchers duel that saw no relief efforts. Wood was great for the Cubs only allowing 2 runs, however Vernon staved off the Cubs until a one run RBI double by Marcus everson. The Senators lead 1-0 heading into tomorrow's game. Game 2 - The Cubs tied it up in a close game which they burst open in the 7th inning with 2 RBI that would eventually lead to a loss for Michael Allen and the Senators. Game 3 - Chicago opened up a great home start to the series by blanking Washington 4-0. The series sways in the Cubs favor now only needing 2 more victories to capture the gold. Their pitching has completely shut down the Senators who have only one batter hitting over .200 for average. Game 4 - The series is tied up again as the first world series looks to be one that will be remembered far down the road. The Senators struck first and kept hacking away at Harley Sanger who may not have had enough rest to really start this game. Game 5 - The Cubs homestand today ended with a big win. The series will head back to Washington but Chicago holds onto a 3-2 lead. Ryan Gordon held the Senators to one run showing off for the Chi-town fans despite a lowly regular season showing. Game 6 - Washington was held on the brink in close first four innings before completely white washing the Chicago pitching staff. Dave Wood got a second series loss as Rich Vernon laid him to rest for the second time. Game 7 - The most anticipated game of the season. Washington in favor with the home field advantage and Michael Allen on the mound. The most exciting game all year nearly ended prematurely in the 9th for the Senators before Ken Young sac flyed and hit in Ty Keller to tie the game up at 6. The score stalled until the 13th inning when the Cubs saw 4 straight batters score and the Senators failed to come alive. A double with two outs scored Howard Risley cutting the lead to 10-7 before Eric Daly grounded out ending the series and sending the Senators packing. |

April 1901 Story Log
April 16, Philadelphia - Third Baseman Paul O'Brien made history Tuesday becoming only the second player in the league to notch 6 hits in one game. A 6 for 6 afternoon included 3 doubles and 2 runs scored. The Red Sox went on to rout the Athletics 16-6. April 17, Philadelphia - Phillies outfielder, Barrett Christopher, got bad news when he was told earlier today he would miss at least 5 weeks due to a partially torn labrum. The former 4th overall pick in the inagural draft has suffered a vast array of injuries the past two years including a fractured foot, abdominal strain, knee inflammation, shoulder tendinitis, and a previously torn labrum. The 29 year old's days may be limited as the Phillies are having trouble keeping the star out on the field. April 24, Boston - Recently signed free agent, Rhett Kelley, has set the pace for all Major League batters as he extended his hit streak to 20 games. The former Pirate helped Pittsburgh fall within one game of the pennant last season and may be the final piece of the puzzle for a Boston team that also just fell short last year. His .385 average this year is 60 points above his lifetime average. |

May 1901 Story Log
May 12, Philadelphia - A 3-4 loss to the Phillies gave the Cincinnati Reds their first loss in over a week. They enter the midway point in May with a 6.5 game hold on the National League. May 17, Detroit - Chris Halpin hit safely against the Red Sox today making it to 22 straight games hitting safely. This breaks the previous record of 21 set by Rhett Kelley earlier last month. May 25, New York - The Senators set their sights on first place again as 7 May games against the Yankees have helped spring board the team. The Indians stranglehold on the AL has loosened losing 7 of their last 9. |

June 1901 Story Log
June 5, Cincinnati - Robby Wagers broke the month old hitting streak record as he trumped Halpin by 3 games ending the run at 26. June 11, Washington - Bad news for the number two AL team and defending pennant winners. Top batter, Ken Young, will miss nearly two months due to a recent back problem. This news comes right as the Senators were informed that star outfielder Lawrence Vogel's injry will cost him a couple more weeks then expected. Washington currently sits 4 games behind Cleveland.
