A Tale of the Worst GM Ever ?
My name is Matt. Everyone calls me Qrash. I am one of the most successful GM in my league's 32-season history (HBLBASEBALL.COM :: Hickory Baseball League). Oh one more thing...I'm also the worst.
Some of you might remember my "Would You Fire Me? thread from back in 2007, that I updated a few times after that. Some background: I was co-founder of our sim league back in 2001 (real time). I think at the time it was OOTP2. I inherited a team with Vladi Guerrero, who was a monster. We started with only 24 teams, contracting a few MLB teams. I drafted Ben Sheets in the contraction draft, who also turned out to be a monster. I started off slow but to make a long story short, I won World Series titles in 2005, 2007 and 2008 with Vladi and Sheets as my main guys. 3 World Series in the first 8 seasons of the league's existence. I was gearing up to be a legend ![]() Fast Forward to the year 2031. 22 seasons have gone by since my last World Series title. Normally that wouldn't be life-shattering. You can't win them all. But keep in mind I've been to the playoffs 13 times since then, including 10 in a row from 2017-2026. 10 seasons in a row, I had to win a World Series, right? Ok, so if I didn't win a World Series I had to at least appear in a couple of them, right? Ok, so I haven't even appeared in any World Series since 2008. At least I've had a few hearbreaking 7 game NL Championship series, right? At this time, you should be saying "wow you suck". Well, it gets worse. Ok, so I didn't have any gutwrenching 7-game series in the NL Championship. At least I made a few NL Championships right? At this point you should be saying "Cmon dude you're joking right? You made 10 straight playoff appearances and you didn't even make the 2nd round?" Well, you're wrong. Ha Ha I got you. I did make the 2nd round. Once. And I was swept. 10 straight appearances and I had not a 2nd second round victory to my name. 2030, I rebuild for a couple of seasons and come out with a 99 win season. Completely unexpected, but I end up with the best record in the league. The Colorado Rockies, who joined as an expansion team in 2029, won the NL West, a weak division. Wow, this should be easy. They kill me and win the series 3-1. It was never even close. To an expansion team. So now its 2032 and my team is even better. 116 wins. Yes, 116 wins. I drafted well and stocked up on good relievers and got lucky with a good starting pitcher that has been a Cy Young candidate for the 2 seasons he’s been in the majors. I didn’t go out and trade for a bunch of guys. 80% of my team is homegrown. The Giants win the NL West with a 79-83 record, but I’m locked into playing the Wildcard team, the Reds. They won 90 games, not too bad. But I have one of the best teams in league history. The playoffs are Sunday night. Anything less than a World Series appearance will be disappointing, but at least just get into the 2nd round!

Just an update for anyone who cares. I finally won a World Series. My Cy Young winner was injured in the 2nd round and missed the entire World Series. As did my #4 starter. But I still defeated the AL Powerhouse Mariners 4-1 to win my first world series in 23 seasons (about 6 years real-time).
