Potential Ratings-Commish Mode

Look at the potential ratings in commish mode...will these increase, or is this the top level in each category that a player can achieve? Is it 100% accurate, or does scouting have an effect?

The reason I ask is b/c I am looking at a 5-star prospect. His potential rating for contact says 120 out of 250. His current rating I can view in the game as manager is 65 out of 80 in contact with a potential of 80. I guess I don't quite get the math here. If he is 65 out of 80, how can his potential be 120 out of 250? And if his potential is 120 out of 80...how is it that I see 80/80 in the game? My scout is not possibly that bad.

Also, with his contact ratings maxed out (120 out of 120), this guy projects to hit .285 and his power is not great (15 HRs). He will walk 44 times. Hardly a 5 star prospect if one were to ask me. I have a one-star guy on the team already who projects almost as good.

Is there anyway to make sense of all this?

The editor ratings are his true ratings. They may still increase or decrease as the game engine decides.

Anything you see outside of the editor with scouts on is merely the opinion of your scout.

Also, keep in mind that the star ratings are relative to other players in the league who play that position. A player may be very average compared to the league as a whole, but if talent is scarce for his position, he could be a 5-star prospect.

What are you scouts biases? If he favors toolsy prospects, he could aggressively overrate the player.

It's starting to make sense...thanks for the replies. Still, can potential ratings rise? Or is the potential a static number?

A players' potential ratings can increase or (more likely) decrease.
