Prelude: Ever wonder what it would be like for Babe Ruth to face Sandy Koufax? Or have Barry Bonds and his godfather, Willie Mays in the same outfield? How would Dead-ball Era Great Christy Mathewson fare against modern-day hitters? All these What-ifs can be answered here.

From his description, here is what it does:

An alternate universe containing every player to ever play in the major leagues, with their debut years mixed up/randomized between 1990 and 2065. Thus you can have Babe Ruth playing against Barry Bonds, etc. (in theory, depending on when they randomly show up in the game).

It is designed for use with a historical game beginning in 2000 (that gives a solid set of players for the 30 MLB teams in the year 2000). As the players are spread out until 2065, that gives many years with which to play the game.

Intro: It's the year 2000, and scientists unveiled the results of a century-long secret, government sponsored operation called the "Brooklyn Project." In cooperation with the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, scientists have created a time machine with a DNA input that brings a previously living ballplayer, back to life form. By using DNA samples from Cooperstown's "DNA bank" one can take a strand of hair from Babe Ruth, a fingernail from Nolan Ryan, or an apple core bitten from the mouth of Christy Mathewson, place it in the machine and within seconds, that player will step out of that machine as a young player, ready to play ball.

In response, the MLB has immediately renounced it rights to all current players, who will now be placed in the database for future harvesting. The "Pro Legends Baseball League" has been formed, and all 30 MLB teams have signed on to play. They will preserve their team names, logos, stadiums, etc.

Every player who has ever played a Major League game is in the Cooperstown DNA Database. Unfortunately, a negligent intern failed to properly label each DNA sample with their respective owner, and thus each incoming crop of players (draft classes) will be totally random and unknown.

PLBL officials have tossed 999 DNA samples consisting of sunflower seed shells, chewing tobacco spit, jock strap pubes, and other bodily fluids from all sorts of different orifices into a bucket. These random unknown samples will be used to reproduce their respective owners and populate the league in an inaugural draft. The draft order will be set randomly, in a serpentine style. For each amateur draft, the PLBL will choose unidentified samples from the random lot (Laymans terms: The draft pool is completely random every year and picked from a database of every player who has ever played an inning. So, like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get). Modern-day (Year 2000) baseball rules and finances apply.

Note: I will be taking control of the Baltimore Orioles for this dynasty, but will include interesting notes and story lines throughout the league. This is my first run at this, so pardon the simple formatting and such, I'll get it all figured out soon.

Inaugural Draft

Jan. 1st, 2000 - The Inaugurual draft takes place today. Commentary:

- Oakland got the luck of the draw, and gets the rights to a 23 year old Babe Ruth, by far the most talented hitter in the draft pool. They also picked up John Smoltz in the second round who should combine with Ruth for a dynamic duo.

- Chicago Cubs got a nice haul in the first few rounds: Rod Carew, Don Newcombe, Brian McCann, and Billy Wagner.

- Brad Wilkerson in the second round? Yuck. Hopefully they genetically engineered his DNA in Cooperstown because no way should he go ahead of Frank Robinson.

Inaugural Draft Commentary

I landed smack in the middle of the first round, with Pick 14.

Round 1, Pick 14 - 3B Honus Wagner

This was a tough one. I really wanted Joe Morgan and was hoping somehow he'd last until the 2nd round, but alas I decided on the 20 year old "Flying Dutchmen," Honus Wagner as my teams cornerstone. A great contact, speed, and defensive player.

Round 2, Pick 16 - LF Carl "Yaz" Yasztrezemski

How many points would "Yasztrezemski" be in Scrabble? A lot. An 18x All-Star and First Ballot HOFer in the 2nd round? Yes sir. Oh wait, I forgot I erased all career stats and history! Anyways, I'll take Yaz as my LF anyday. Unfortunately, his contract is only for 1 year, so we'll see how it works out.

Round 3 - C Gary "The Kid" Carter

It killed me to pass on 1B Rod Carew, and C Thurmon Munson but I have a special place in my heart for Gary Carter. That makes 3 HOFers in 3 rounds.

Round 4 - RF Bobby Bonilla

Will I get the powerhitting force Bobby Bonilla? Or the fat, out of shape, twinkie monger Bobby Bonilla? We shall see.

Round 5 - SP Al Spalding


Look down at your balls. They probably say "Spalding." Al Spalding is the reason. Al Spalding was a prolific pitcher before he created Spalding Sporting Goods. Hopefully he can help out the front office with some of those posthumous royalty-checks he's receiving, now that he's back alive. Maybe he can help us resign Carl Yasz... I give up trying to spell it.

Round 6 - Livan Hernandez

Here is where I get pissed, because I was hoping David Wells would be here but he gets picked a few selections before mine. I settle for Livan, and hope he can bring his postseason magic.

Amateur Draft

So I was looking through some players, and when I mentioned Tim Raines was vastly underrated and I had to edit him I didn't realize I was looking at Tim Raines Jr., who had a far less illustrious career than his father. Also of note: Part of the fun I am realizing in doing this is that has become a sort of history lesson in baseball. I find a player in the game and then research his career and what not. Thus, I've decided to add some links to information about players you may not be familiar with, many HOFers, so that you too can share the experience.

Anyways, Here are the first 2 rounds of the amateur draft. I didn't know how to do the draft order since there is no barometer of which teams are good and which aren't. So what I did was give the first pick to the team with last pick in the inaugural draft, and set the order in that order, which left the Baltimore Orioles with Pick 17.

Baltimore Orioles Picks

Round 1 - RHP Ryan Dempster

I was looking at Fernando Vina, but went with Dempster on my scouts recommendation. I totally overlooked Cecil Fielder who I love, and was kicking myself when I saw him get picked later because I need badly a 1B with pop. At just age 20, Dempster will spend the season in AAA, most likely.

Round 2 - LHP Eppa Rixey

I again pass of Fernando Vina and go with Hall-of-Fame LHP Eppa Rixey. Rixey was the all-time leading game winner for LHP before Warren Spahn came around. What a steal in round 2! He is ready to step into the rotation right away!

Round 3 - 1B Howie Kendrick

I am desperate for help at 1B, and the 20 year old Kendrick may be forced to play right away. He also plays 2B, but has a higher rating at 1B.


Spring Training Notes:

I forgot to turn off Spring Training, and had to play it out for this season. It will be turned off for next season.
