BZ 3191: Non-catcher catching at start of game.

I loaded up the 1990 season and started playing out games manually. First thing I noticed was that the Astros have put Tuffy Rhoades--an outfielder with no catcher rating--as their starting catcher against righties. There are two decent real catchers the AI could have chosen; Craig Biggio and Terry Steinbeck.

And Biggio and Steinbeck weren't hurt or tired? You're seeing this behavior in their depth chart or in actual games or both?

Steinbeck and Biggio are healthy and rested. Tuffy Rhodes is listed as the starting catcher against righties in the depth chart and he was in the lineup on opening day as the catcher. This is a real head-scratcher since Tuffy is a good right fielder and yet the manager decided to put utility guy and bad outfielder Casey Candele out there against righties instead of Tuffy. I tried going to commisih mode and having both the manager and bench coach redo the lineups and depth charts. They both again chose Tuffy as their starting catcher. I checked every other team's depth chart and found no other such anomaly. I looked at Tuffy's rating in editor mode to see if he had some kind of hidden catcher rating. He doesn't. Weird

I'm having a problem with the 1974 A's. When I import and sim the season (1-year recalc), I keep seeing a problem at C. Even though the A's have Tenace and Fosse on the active roster (and Haney and Hosley on the reserve roster), they use Bourque at C more often than anyone else. Bourque has a "0" rating at C. He never played C in his major league career.

What are Biggio and Steinbeck's ratings at catcher (including the scale you are using)?

Steinbeck's catcher rating is 41, arm 38, catcher ability 38. Biggio's catcher rating is 52, arm 46 and catcher ablility 46 (out of 100).
