A second chance
I selected five heavyweights from the golden era of boxing that never were world champions and gave then an other oppotunity running their careers on the nineties for me the second golden era. All five fighters will start their careers in 1987.
Now I will introduce the five main characters of this universe and how they perform on their first year as proffesionals |

His best victory by far is against fellow prospect Lawrence Carter. The rest aren't good fighters, the following year is time for a step up on the level of competition for Cleveland. |

Oscar "Ringo" Bonavena
Ringo is 21 years old and his record is 6-1-1 (3)
20/02/87 D(m)4 Lorenzo Canady 6-3-1 (2) 4 rounds 15/03/87 WKO4 Aisea Nama 26-12-2 (9) 4 rounds 18/04/87 WUD6 Jorge Dascola 9-1-0 (5) 6 rounds 20/05/87 WUD4 Daniel Falconi 17-3-1 (11) 4 rounds 30/06/87 WTKO4 Arturo Diaz 13-3-2 (8) 6 rounds 16/07/87 LKO2 Bernardo Mercado 30-4-0 (26) 8 rounds 20/09/87 WTKO4 Domingo D'Elia 25-5-3 (12) 6 rounds 11/11/87 WUD6 Dick Ryan 4-0-0 (2) 6 rounds After defeating fellow argentines Dascola and Falconi and rough mexican Arturo Diaz, Bonavena made a huge step up facing expirienced Bernardo Mercado. Bonavena dominated the first round of this fight but finally Mercado put him to sleep with a huge right on the second round. After that fight Bonavena stayed two months inactive and the came back against domestic rival Domingo D'Elia that came out form a three years of retirement for this fight. Bonavena stopped D'Elia and recovered his confidence and finally closed the year beating undefeated Dick Ryan. On 1988 Bonavena wants like nothing else a rematch against Bernardo Mercado. The Heavyweight division at the end of 1987
World Ranking
Mike Tyson 32-0-0 (28) WBC, WBA, IBF 1 Michael Spinks 31-0-0 (21) Ring champion 2 Tony Tucker 34-1-0 (29) 3 Tim Witherspoon 27-3-0 (18) 4 Pinklon Thomas 29-2-1 (24) 5 Carl Williams 19-2-0 (16) 6 Trevor Berbick 34-5-1 (25) 7 Adilson Rodriguez 28-2-0 (21) 8 Tyrrell Biggs 15-1-0 (10) 9 Mike Weaver 31-13-1 (22) 10 Frank Bruno 32-2-0 (31) On 1987 Mike Tyson added the WBA (beating James Smith) and IBF belts (defeating Tony Tucker) to his WBC crown to be the first undisputed champion since Leon Spinks. Mike also stopped former champion Pinklon Thomas and former gold medallinst Tyrrell Biggs on this year. Michael Spinks only fought once in 1987 in stopping Gerry Cooney on a very lucrative fight. But the IBF stripped him from his title for not facing number one contender Tony Tucker that won the vacant belt beating Buster Douglas only to lost it against Tyson on his first defense. For his next fight Mike Tyson will face former heavyweight ruler Larry Holmes 48-2-0 (35) that at 38 came out from retirement to face Iron Mike. For the following year it is expected that undefeated WBC cruiserweight champ Evander Holyfield 17-0-0 (13) will jump to the heavyweight division after his unification fight against WBA and IBF cruiserweight king Carlos De Leon. Finally another great that came out of ten years of retirement is George Foreman that scored five KO wins in five fights against second tier level opposition. The boxing world is expecting the fight between the unified champion Tyson against the people champion Michael Spinks. |
