J. Henry Waugh Cup Ends Under Cloud of Suspicion!
The Cincinnati Pioneers called foul to any newspaper reporter who would listen and threated to storm the offices of Commissioner Albert Spalding. In successive innings, with the go-ahead runner on third base, the home plate umpire Jack Varholm called a balk on the Cincinnati Pioneer hurler on the mound. The trouble to both the Pioneer bench and the livid Cincinnati fans in the stands was that it was too entirely different Cincinnati pitchers! Both Gunner Dooley AND Asa Brainard were called for balks with a runner on third base in the 10th and 11th innings. As the final out was recorded, Varholm had to escape from the stadium through the visiting Metropolitan dugout as the entire left field bleachers emptied out in search for blood. Thousands of fans truly turned into fanatics as they sought to make good on the age-old promise to "Kill the Umpire". We will follow up on this story as more information surfaces and Mr. Varholm can be found. Oh, the New York Metropolitans "defeated" the Cincinnati Pioneers 7 to 6, winning the championship series 4 games to 2.
