No-hitter through 7 in Oakland

Looks like the knuckleball is working tonight. Wake has a no-hitter going through 6 and has only thrown 54 pitches.

I'm actually surprised more knuckleballers haven't pitched no hitters in history.

Tony is British. Maybe he doesn't know about the jinx. I mean, what's the comparable? Don't talk about a clean sheet in football? Nah.

Does that mean in TV/Radio Coverage of all the past no-hitters they've never once uttered the words "no hitter" during the course of the game?

It took 2.1 innings for the 'jinx' to take effect. If it was a jinx there'd have been 2 outs in the 9th, a 0-2 count on the batter and a simple pop-up to first that caused Youk to slip and tumble in a mess on the ground missing the chance*

* edit, on reflection that would actually maintain the no-hitter as the batter would have reached on an error thus not recorded as a hit.

Perfect games I could "understand" jinxing it (although I don't subscribe to the whole premise) as they are so rare, but no-hitters not so much. It'd be a bit like not saying a hitter is a triple short of the cycle. They're rarer than no-hitters.

More men have orbited the moon than have pitched a perfect game, that's how rare they are.

Next someone will be saying it is okay to step on the lines when you're walking on or off the field. I can not imagine (nor would I want to) baseball without superstitions, jinxes, and curses. All these things are a part of baseball as much as the bat and the ball.

My post was firmly tongue-in-cheek, and I have a feeling those above me were as well.

While I enjoy the superstitions of baseball, I don't think someone posting on a message board can actually jinx a no-hitter.

He probably talks about no hitters at Fight Club.

You must find the game itself pretty boring if superstitions are the most important thing. Personally, I'd go and find another sport to watch if extraneous events were the most interesting.

Dood, everyone knows you don't talk to the pitcher in the middle of a no-hitter.

It's not the most important thing, it's just a part of the game. Wade Boggs ate chicken before every game. That guy would stand around naked with a hat on. Randy Myers wore a camo shirt under his uniform. These things have been around since the beginning of the game.

When I was pitching I hated when guys didn't talk to me. I never threw a no hitter or anything, but it seemed like from Babe Ruth (I think it's called Pony League in most places) on up, it seemed like everyone took the 'leave the pitcher alone' thing too far.

If everyone was ignoring me on the bench it would just make me more nervous. I pitched far better when I wasn't thinking about pitching during our team's ABs, and if no one was talking to me I had nothing else to think about except pitching the next half inning. I'm definitely one of those brain-gets-in-the-way guys when it comes to sports. The less I thought about it the better, no matter which sport I was playing.

Apparently Doc Ellis went on about it constantly during his Acid-trip no-hitter.
