Question about Name Files

I downloaded a Zip of name files from baseballsimcentral...contains the standard Names and FNames files, but also contained others for Latin American and Asian players. My question is this: how will OOTP4 use these other files? Or are they just replacements for when I want to start an all Asian league or something?

The asian and latin player name files are used for generating names of players who are from latin or asian countries when the game generates new fictional players, which are part of any league you create fictionally.

oh...so the game should use those files automatically? Only reason I ask is I didn't notice any Latin American or Asian players in the league that I just created.

That's unusual. It normally sprinkles them around. It's particularly rare to find no Latin players.

You need to set those files up to use. I don't have the zip handy but there are seperate files right? [a pair for Asian and Latin] In that case you would need to change the Asian file names to Fname and Name in order for the game to use them. It does not use multiple files and grabs all its names from those files. Also remember to backup the files currently named Fname and Name or you will overwrite them.

Just put them all in the root directory of OOTP, where the originals are (you may want to back the originals up) and it should work.

AH....I see. So...hypothetically, if I were to combine all three of those files into 1, then I'd get the mix that I'm looking for, huh?

That depends on the mix you're looking for. The game randomly assigns names to players by randomly picking names off the list. If the player is American, it picks from the Names file for last names and the FNames file for first name. If the player is from a Latin American country, it does the same with the files that are preceded by an L. If the player is Asian, it will pick from the files that start with an A.

If you combine them all, it will pick randomly in the same way, but you will end up with guys with strangely mixed names like Hideki Gonzalez or Pedro Hayaki or Soon Yee Smith because the game won't differentiate between them. There is no way to control what percentage of guys the game will pick from each type. It is hardwired into the game. If you are looking to make an all-Latino or all-Asian league, there are instructions around on how to do that, if you do a search.

Maybe I misread Willy's post then...I thought he said I'd need to rename those other files if I wanted the game to pull from them?

I see what you are saying about the mix of First Name and Last name...forgot about that.

So I'm still stuck trying to figure out why I've got all "regular" names. hmmmm

If you want to have an all-Asian player league, you could make all three file types (American/Asian/Latin) into Asian files. It would then only have Asian names to draw from. It would still say a guy came from USA or Puerto Rico or whatever, but his name would be Asian.

Actually, I want the league to have the mix of names...mostly "American" names, with the occasional mix of Asian and LA players...
So...let me get this straight...the game is SUPPOSE to pull from all 3 name files right? All by itself, without me needing to copy anything or move anything or whatever...

Here's something interesting...not sure how true this is, but I'll put it out there. I've been starting my fictional leagues in the year 1900. By accident, while I was experimenting with starting a new league, I set it to 2000. Well, half of the players in the new league had Latin American names, a couple of them had Asian names, and even their country of origin reflected their names!

Is OOTP4 "THAT" smart that it knew there were most American players in the early 1900's, and only recently were there Latin American and Asian players? Is that why I never saw any "other" names?

Wow. This game never stops amazing me!

No it treats all leagues like a modern-style league by default no matter what the year is. It is up to us as users to edit things (ie. names, era totals etc.) to reflect the time period. What makes the game great is that it is not overly difficult to do this however.
