Does anybody feel funny doing this sim stuff?
I just want to get some people's opinions.
Does anybody out there feel a little nerdy for messing with this ootp sim type of game. Or does anyone get slack from friends or family for doing this. Well, let me give you a little of my background: I am a 29 year old black male from Hartford, Ct.(If you know anything about my city, you would know how unusaul my love of baseball and stats are). I come from a predominatly black neighborhood, but love all sports especially baseball. But I am mostly infactuated with stats, and stumbled across OOTP a couple years back. If some of the "thugs" I grew up with knew I played OOTP, I would have my "ghetto pass" revoked. Also I have 2 kids, and my wife thinks it the stupidest thing ever. Last summer I had to sneak in most of my games. So what are some opinions and experiences on this? |

I am also 29, have a 2nd kid on the way, and my wife also thinks this is the stupidest thing ever. Makes it worse that I've been simming the same league since I was 11. Luckily, the guy across the hall from me freshman year of college was as dorky and into baseball as I was, so I have one sole friend who is into this stuff the same way I am. The rest of my friends would think I'm a loser if they saw how much I enjoyed baseball simming. It's a secret I try to hide from the rest of the world.

It's funny that you would bring this up... I've often thought about how crazy most of my friends would think I am if they knew how much I enjoy OOTP. I'm a baseball stats geek and feel weird even thinking about trying to explain it to my friends. Some of them are at least casual fantasy baseball players, but I'm not sure even they would understand.

I'd say it's cool, but then, I'm a geek.

I was pretty sure it was mandatoryfor wives to think that OOTP is the epitome of nerdiness...at least that's the feeling I get from my wife.

mine is a secret shame. Only those closest to me know of my involvement with OOTP. They don't say much about it. i guess they figure its just my thing.
If they knew how involved i am, they would probably try to hold an intervention. Hang in there Diamond, i don't think "they" can take away our ghetto passes. But they might put us on double secret probation. |

How is it different than playing Nintendo, X-Box etc. I have 3 kids, married and my wife thinks I am nuts but she doesn't care as long as I try and be reasonable with the time spent doing it. Usually after kids are in bed. I always liked the sim concept, as it allows you to be a General Manager of a sports team, albeit a fictional one. Thank goodness for that as I would be worse than the D-Rays
![]() Actually I have 4 co-workers that are now involved. They love it. We all play ball, some hockey and flag football. This is just some evening entertainment for me, as I hate most of the TV shows my wife watches. |

You know, it's not so much as OOTP (or FPS before it), but the fact that I was a commissioner of an online league for nearly 9 years. That's the part my wife thought made me an uber dork. Getting IMs from people I never met regarding trades of fictional baseball players doesn't rank up there on the cool list. I'm still not sure why she married me.

I'm not sure what my wife thinks. I haven't seen her in the past 2 months or so, because I can't get her to stop playing Civ IV.
I have a buddy that I grew up with who pretty much has the exact same nerdy tendencies and love for stats-mongering as I do, so I am at least able to share the fetish without fear. ![]() Personally, I don't see the problem, as long as you're not shirking your responsibilities to your family. I mean, would she rather have a husband who crunches numbers into the wee hours trying to find that hidden gem, or one who goes out with his buddies to get wasted every other night, even when he's 25, 30, 35, 40 years old? For me, at least, that would be a no-brainer. Which of those is "stupider"?? |

Ah, but if you saw my post about the game and playing them out in the new version, I said in there that my wife plays with me. Weird? Perhaps. Strange? Maybe. Cool? You betcha.

I started playing with OOTP4, and quickly got my brother hooked. We are both decendents of Sierra's FPS Baseball. My brother actually printed everything out with that league and kept it in a binder so he could go back and look at stats, etc.
Now, I buy him each new verstion of OOTP for his birthday, and we talk about players non stop. He'll ask me about trades he's thinking of making, etc. I normally tell him about great seasons my players are having, then we compare stats. As is the general concensus, my wife is not enthused about the game, but I try to keep the playing time reasonable. It's only when a new game comes out and I set up new leagues and stuff that I am sometimes less available than she'd like.

I've been playing sim baseball since Ethan Allen's "All Star Baseball" when I was probably like 6. From there, I migrated to the Strat-o-Matic tabletop game, SI's Computer Baseball on my C-64, the original version of APBA for DOS, FPS Baseball (94-98) and then I finally found OOTP.
My wife thinks it's silly, but doesn't really give me a hard time about it any more...although she will occasionally ask me how my "little imaginary men" are doing. |

I myself have been addicted to baseball simming since the days of earl weaver baseball. I am 29 years old too I just had my 3rd child. my wife supports me in this even though she does not understand it... she calls me a dork and a nerd and asked if I could pick up a real addiction like for example alcohol, cocaine or killing hookers...
but she loves me just the same. that being said I have never been more excited about a game in my life... seeya on the field

I've only been playing OOTP for a couple of weeks but my wife can stand it a bit compared to my sports boardgaming. (replay baseball mostly) She's not big on either and I get the same looks that I'm sure some of you do. I had Gaylord Perry blow out his arm at 25 and had a career ending injury. I let out a curse, she asked me what happened, I told her......you all can imagine that one.

It's pretty cool that there are other guys out there like me.
How about this though: When I was younger about 11 or 12, I use to play strat-o-matic the board game. My dad would catch me playing and say it would be better off if he cought me "choking the chicken" I guess he meant it would be more normal for my age. I had to sneak and play because my dad would make fun of me, and tell his friends that I was nerd and didn't like girls. I wonder what he would think if he knew I never stopped doing sim. Also, I'm not a complete nerd because I also play sports and lift weights all year round. But, I keep complete stats for the softball team I play for, and have a web-site for it. I also keep stats for a beer pong league I'm in. Now that is nerdy! |
