Can anyone explain to me what the +/- in hockey is? I always see that my the player's name, but what is it?

It only counts for even strength goals (not powerplay or shorthanded) and is pretty basic.

If you're on the ice when your team scores a goal you get +1

If you're on the ice when your team gives up a goal you get -1

It's an extremely simplistic way of gauging a players defensive capabilities/awareness.

actually, you also get +1 if you team scores shorthanded and get -1 if your team gives up a shorthanded goal

That number is not always a good way to evaluate a player's capabilities. It's largely influenced by the team for which you play. The same defenseman could have a really high score in Detroit, and have a really low one with Toronto (hehe!).

Good point, it is also influenced heavily by your linemates and the situations you are put out on. If you are a defensive superstar who is always set out to try and shut down the opposing teams best players you may still have a poor +/- because even at the best of times they will find ways to beat you here and there. Still it can be a useful comparison between player's if you take these things into consideration especially player's on the same team or when compared relative to their team.

A player on my fantasy team was -4 the other night - and the opponent only scored 4 goals. Yanic Perreault I think it was, but I sure don't follow hockey. Bad or unlucky? You decide.

Yeah, it was a terrible game for the Habs. A lot of guys on the team had -4.
