Whats best strategy to turn crap team into yankees

I'm trying to turn the tigers into the best franchise ever but having no luck. Ive been playing for 20 years and only 2 playoff appearances and out first round each time. I have tried building through the draft but all my picks were busts. I tried signing as many free agents as I could but those guy all turned into busts after a year. Basically what happens is all my players I get and trade for have good ratings then after one year they all get like .5 stars for ratings after being 4 or 5 star guys. So any tips?

Just some thoughts on the subject. I have gotten some excellent prospects by trading away veterans. I have never been able to get a top player to perform at a high level. I seem to get better results by going for a lot of very good players (.275-.290, 15-20HR good defense and a good pitching staff).
