How to get more complete games?
In my online league, we just completed our first season, and we want more complete games by pitchers next season.
There are three (or four) settings which seem to control this: in General Strategic Tendencies the "Use of relievers," "Use of Closers," and "Pitcher Endurance" settings; and in League Totals the "Starting Pitcher Endurance" setting. Right now, all of our General Strategic Tendencies are set to "Normal" and in League Settings, our "Starting Pitcher Endurance" is at a "1.000" setting. Assuming that our shortage of complete games was not caused by an epidemic or poor outings by starting pitchers (and we do want a starting pitcher to be replaced during a game in which he's pitching markedly poorly), what changes should we make to our league settings, in order to see more complete games? |

In General strategic tendencies I would change pitching endurance (or stamina, whatever they use there) to very high or high. That'll do the trick, as well as lowering how often relievers are used.

I used the pitchers endurance under league totals. I increased it by .100 and it gave me a few more complete games.

Thanks for your input, guys.
I guess the main question is whether the computer is lifting starting pitchers because they're actually getting tired, or because of a strategic mindset that just favors bringing in a reliever at an earlier point in the game than, for example, would have been done in 1965, as opposed to 1990. In order to figure this out, I suppose I need to analyze the box scores and see if pitchers holding leads, with fewer than 100 pitches thrown, are getting lifted. |

It may not help here, but you can get more complete games from a pitching staff by setting up a slower hook in Team Strategy.

Thanks MD. My goal is not for my team's pitchers to accomplish pitching more complete games due to how they're handled, my goal is for there to be a leaguewide tendency for pitchers to be more likely to pitch complete games. I want to change the "reality" of the league, if you will, to be one in which complete games are the more the norm. (Not that we want an excessive number of complete games; we just want to raise them by about 20%.)
