Who is my AL single season batting champion?

Who is the rightful AL single season batting champion?

I've just completed 1964 in my fictional league, LOB (Legends of Baseball). Richard Douglass is my current record holder for batting average in a season, but in 1964 Gary Robeson broke the record. Take a look at how both men stacked up in their record breaking season.

.405
Richard Douglass
Boston
1934

.445
Gary Robeson
Los Angeles
1964

Robeson: 115 games, 436 at bats, 59 BBs, 21 K's, .512 OBP, .596 SLG%

Douglass: 153 games, 565 atbats, 121 BBs, 116 K's, .510 OBP, .657 SLG%

This is in a 154 game season.

(Note: I had typed this yesterday and forgot to post it, I actually just finished 1966 lol...)

Personally, I think Robeson should be disqualified for only having 436 atbats...he won the batting title for 1964 and the game officially recognizes him as being the AL single season batting champion. I think with 100 fewer atbats than Douglass that this is a blemish in the record books.

What do you guys think?

I wanted to get some feedback before changing it in the record book.

It is actually 3.1 "plate appearances" per game for your team, which is 477 and if you add his walks to atbats he more than "officially" qualifies.

Oh...ouch...

Boy does .445 look bad in there or what? lol...

Guess I'll let it stand for now anyway. 8-)

The record for the NL by the way is .415 by Herbert Volz.

The real life AL batting average record is .426 by Nap Lajoie

The all time record is .440 Hugh Duffy in 1894 (according to Baseball-Reference.com)

Oh, I only remembered the .426 one...well if a person batted .440 then it doesn't sound that bad.

His average "plummetted" to .358 the next year lol...

Was 1894 the year that walks counted as hits?

Nope 1887 is the year that walks counted as hits. It was also the year that the rule that batters could call for a high or low pitch was abolished.

Wow, Roberson only had 21 K's in 456 at bats.

Twins,

I had a guy in an online league only fan 13 times in 595 at bats and so far 110 times in 3,100+ at bats.

Holy cow Steve...that's incredible.

I just finished 1969 an hour or so ago...so I'll be starting 1970 next time I start it up.

This is the longest running league I've ever had, my previous being that 31 year Tennessee Smokies league that I ended up dropping...

This has just been a blast to play. Once I'm done with the league officially I'll probably upload every "end of season" league file and some baseball-reference style player pages as well to my website...maybe some will find it interesting. :P

In one of my first historical leagues, I had a guy (some no-name, I forget who) go the entire season (over 500 AB) without ever striking out. I had miscalculated the strikeouts when inputing league totals. I think the league leader had 30 Ks!
