BZ 1756: Coaching system "off" but some teams have coaches

In my world setup, I've got "Use coaching system" turned "off" but almost every team, at every level (one major league, three levels of minors), has coaches.

I've got coaching, scouting, and financials all turned off.

Will these coaches affect my universe somehow? Is there some way to delete these coaches?

Turning off coaches and/or scouting just deactivates them, it doesn't get rid of them. If you go to the "World" and look up personel from a country, they will all be listed.

If you want to delete them, you need to turn coaching back on, release the coaches, then delete them manually from the FA Personel screen.

I can't seem to fire any other teams' coaches besides my own.

My league is enabled as an "online league" and I'm the "Commissioner" but when I go to any other team's coaches (except for my own team), I'm not given the option of firing them. Only a few of my league's teams have human managers enabled, but I can't fire the human-less teams' coaches either.

How can I fire the coaches of the teams I don't officially "manage?"

Use the "Act As" feature and you should be able to. I would also recommend running the "assign personel contracts" with the average coach contract to $0 so they don't add anything to teams finances.

Since I had finances turned off, the coaches all had a $0 salary already.

I had looked for the "Act as" pulldown earlier, and I didn't find it. I was accustomed to seeing it in the extreme upper right-hand corner, like it is in OOTP 8. Since you referred to it, I looked for it again and found it.

Thanks very much for your quick replies, I appreciate the help.

There is no way to mass delete all the unwanted coaches, so I'm having to go through and delete them one at a time. There are about 300 coaches. I had to fire them all individually as well.

Since a league which has the coaching system turned "off" generates coaches and assigns them to teams anyway, it would be convenient to have a way to mass delete all these free-agent coaches, just as one can mass delete free-agent players. I recommend this addition to the game.

Do you know whether "Fill roster with fictional players" will replace those coaches? I made some changes to my player creation modifiers and want to re-generate the players for this league. Will that also create new coaches?

I don't believe so, but you could always make a copy of your .lg folder and try it out.

Of note, existing coaches assigned to teams shouldn't do anything when coaches are turned off.

Is there anything more that we can help you with?

Nutlaw, sorry I missed your last reply. Everything had been going well.

In setting up my league, I changed my player creation modifiers, deleted all the current players, then used "Fill roster with fictional players" for all teams.

This caused some funny things to happen.

I have three levels of minors, plus one level of major leagues; each ML team has three affiliated minor league teams, one at each of the three levels (A, AA, AAA). When I re-filled my rosters with fictional players, all the organizations' rosters filled up with 100 players, 25 per level, except for one team, which got 101 players (26 at AAA, 25 at all other levels). Also, for three of my sixteen ML teams, the 25 players who were on the ML roster would not show up. They would appear, however, when I selected "Show all players in organization" (this screen showed the 25 "missing" players as having been assigned to the ML team, as indicated when I checked the "show team" column in the view, but nothing I could do would make these players show up on the ML roster screen). So I went through and manually assigned the 25 supposedly-ML players to the ML "Active roster." Then they seemed to show up normally. (The team with 101 players was not one of the teams with the empty ML roster.)

I have scouting and coaching turned off, and earlier I had gone through and manually deleted all the coaches. When I re-filled the team rosters, each team was assigned a Scouting Director. I went through and manually fired all the SDs, then went through the Free Agent list and deleted them all (I think I had to turn scouting on to do this, but I'm not certain), which worked fine.

When I went to "Explore world" there were many coaches, although none were assigned to teams. I can't delete these coaches, no matter what I do. When I click on them and hit Delete, nothing happens, either with the right click menu, or by going to the pull-up menu on the bottom right of the screen.

In the process of trying to delete all these coaches, I accidentally created a player photo for one of them (I say this in case it relates to what happened afterwards). Since I couldn't delete the coaches, I went to close the game, and when it was saving during game shutdown, I got the "DATABASE::load _database-could not load faces file" error, and then got an error in OOTP9.exe. Whenever I tried to reload the league, I'd get the same error, and the game would lock up. I'd have to Ctrl-Alt-Del to close the game.

Luckily, I'd backed up (with the in-game backup feature) not long before all this, and I copied over the faces.dat file from that backup into my league, and now I can get back into the league. Yet the coaches are still there, and I can't delete them no matter what, with coaches and scouts turned on or off.

I am using the latest version, 9.1.2, and I saved the bad faces.dat file.

Thanks for listening.

I can confirm that I can find foreign coaches using Explore World that I cannot delete. I can't force any crashes by attempting to delete them. This is with coaches on. BZ 1756.

Could you please try to recreate your "fill all rosters with fictional players" issue with a newly created league?

I haven't recreated this problem with a new league yet, but I do have a saved version of the league I described above, saved at the point just before this happened.

All teams' rosters are empty, and when you tell it to "fill rosters with fictional players," the game puts 25 players on each ML roster, but on three teams, these players are not on the Active Roster, and do not appear on the default Roster view. They appear when you "show all players of organization" and if you customize the view to show the players' league and team, their ML team and league do show up. But they must all be manually assigned to the ML roster, or they do not otherwise appear.

I will also try to recreate this problem with a fresh league.

I think I figured out what's causing the "missing players" problem. This is an online league and I've got all teams set to "Don't let AI make roster moves," and the three teams on which the players aren't getting assigned to their team rosters are the only three human-managed teams. I suppose that, even though I have all teams set to not let the AI make roster moves, the AI is making the move of putting newly-generated players on the active roster (of the previously empty teams), and the "presence" of human managers on the other three teams is stopping the AI from assigning the newly-created players to their teams' active rosters.

I would think that, with all teams set to "Don't let AI make roster moves," all of the teams would show the same behavior, but the AI is still making that roster move, unless there's a human manager for the team. In theory, all my teams are human-controlled, but unless there's an actual human manager assigned to the team, the AI is still making some basic moves.

Sorry I didn't figure that out sooner. The inconsistency threw me off.
