Home Runs and the game engine
In play today, I changed the home run modifier (under league totals) to .000 and yet, the very next day of games, one player has a 2 HR game. Only his 2nd and 3rd of the year, in 40 games or so, no less.
I was under the impression that setting the modifier to .000 would prevent any HR from being hit. The manual says "For example, if you want 10% more home runs, you could leave the league total at 5400, and just change the home runs modifier to 1.100" leading me to think that if I want eliminate all HR, just change it to .000 and play on. Obviously I misunderstand how this works. Can anyone fill me in, briefly? |

I don't know any of this for sure but I wouldn't be surprised if the game isn't capable for 0 homeruns. Homeruns are one of the pillars of the DIPS pyramid (to steal a joke from Dilbert). You're players still have power ratings (homeruns) so the game probably has a hard time reconciling players with homerun power in a league where they're not supposed to hit homeruns.
My $.02.

Sometimes the simulation breaks down when you try to make it do things way out on the extreme edge. For example, there was a thread where ctorg was trying to make parks with a home run factor of .01 or something. He expected there to be, like, one or two homers hit there all year. In fact there ended up being 20 or 30.
I have a Greenland Winter Ice Baseball league in my universe. I set some of the fan interest/population/stadium capacity variables about as low as they can go. And sometimes I see negative attendance at games. And I've seen a case of a pitcher with (in the editor) strikeout rating of 254. Maxed out. He was signed by a low-level independent league and proceeded to strike out a good, consistent three batters a game. Essentially Sandy Koufax pitching in the Northern League, striking out three batters a game. Apparently what was happening is in certain circumstances his K rating rolled over to 0 or 5 or something. The game works great in anything remotely resembling reality. Unfortunately, you'll occasionally get a Martian Hobbit League to break it.

Thanks for the explanations. I'll just keep in mind that things work as I expected unless I ask the game to do something way out of the ordinary.

I have also seen players (historical) who had no HR's for the season IRL hit a homerun off a pitcher who didn't allow any IRL. It's kind of annoying. |
