How do the development reports work in this game?

I previously played a lot of historic leagues based on real life stats so this new league is my first crack at trying development with v9. It's still historic, but I put everyone on fictional teams and at least thought I turned off all the real life stats development. From the manual I figured out I should turn off the recalc ratings from real stats and turn off the real life retirement. To the best of my figuring this should let development occur all on its own.

OK I have now played about 50 games and not one team has a single change in the development reports. Nothing has been added, they are all essentially blank. Now I have seen ratings on players change, why aren't they showing up in the development reports? Is there some other setting in the configuration I missed? Do you need to do something with the development reports other than look at them?

The development reports aren't updated in real-time now. It's pretty much only once a year or some other long stretch of time.

How incredibly useless is that...isn't the use case presented that online leagues sim a week at a time and they'd like to see changes at that level? Most 3rd party tools provide that information, how much trouble is it to produce these reports? As far as I can tell, only the last few reports are saved, so time between reports should be an option.

I only see reports once a year in my historical league. Is there some setting I need to change? I've looked around a bit but can see any menu to adjust. I get a report for veterans on Jan 1, and a report for guys new to the league on March 2, but that is all as far as I can tell.

Unless you have scouting on it's once a year right?

Ah, that could be the reason. I usually play with the scouts turned off. Should have thought of that, but thanks for the reminder.

Aha! I was right. I've only ever seen once a year in my historical league (I always have scouts off).

This still begs the question, however, of why put this back into the game if it only takes place once per year? It is of limited value to say the least. Monthly, or at least bi-monthly, would have been nice.

I guess you could say it adds a little uncertainly back in that you removed when you turned scouts off, but if I'd wanted more uncertainty I would have kept scouting on in the first place.

Honestly, even with scouts off and it giving me once a year reports, I still don't find it terribly accurate. I have an aging second baseman who has been a bench player for two seasons now. His batting Talents have dropped from 8/4/10 or so to 6/2/7. His scouting report, even though those Talents dropped more than a year ago, still reads 8/4/10. The development report hasn't updated to the fact that his Talents aren't what they used to be either.

I don't bother trusting either one, which REALLY sucks when playing with large minor league systems. I miss the old development report.

I understand the change and the reasons for it, because talent change isn't an event that all of a sudden happens. But on the other hand, the clarity of the old development reports were nice.

My solution, for what little its worth, would be along these lines. You still see the old-style development reports that so many people like. But instead of the changes being sudden, the development of talent changes is still gradual. But the report only notifies you when the amount of change passes a certain threshold. So in your example above, when your 2B talent in contact passed the line that dropped it from 8 to 7, you would get a message saying that Player X's contact potential is now rated 7. That way, the change can still be gradual, not sudden, but you also get notification that a change in value is in process.

Hopefully I didn't muddle that explanation too much.

I know exactly what you mean and that's what I'd like to see.

And now that I've posted complaining about the scouting reports not showing his real numbers, the one for the season I just started today finally caught up and shows it. Figures.

Probably this is no secret to anyone but me, but I've just noticed that under league options, under the functions button at the bottom right, there is an option that says Run OSA Rescout. So you can update the scouting report at any time, it appears. But that still means you either have to remember what guys were before or write it down in order to know if a change took place. Which brings us back to why having a report to inform you of these things would be so helpful.
