Confounding Save Game Issues

I was on vacation recently and I returned today to find that my saved games no longer work. The troubling thing is that this is not the first time. With every game I start, it seems to crash around 2010 if I walk away and don't load it every day. The errors have ranged from failure to load the database, to failure to load the options to the managers. I'm tired of finally seeing my Pirates win a World Series only to have the game crash the following year. In the most recent case, the game loads perfectly but if I hit any button on screen, the Windows popup that "ootp9.exe has encountered an error" rears its head.

Is it simply a matter of backing up my game data(hard to do with limited space) or is the stability of my system in question?

Running XP on SP2
