What do I do now? (Reg Season pre-all-star)

I mentioned in this thread that I'm toying around with the idea of some sort of newbie tutorial thing divided by different times of the season. So, to that end, I'm creating several threads to get feedback on specific times of the OOTP year.

So, with no further ado:

What should new GMs do in the first half of the regular season, up to th All-Star break?

Determine if your team is actually in contention.

Begin collecting scouting reports on any prospects (if you're a seller) or veterans (if you're a buyer) and start shopping players around to test the market.

I like to scout each team one by one starting in my league than moving over to the other.I than use this info for matchup purposes(I play out my games) and for trade purposes EG...if I know a team is weak in LF but strong in the bullpen and I have a tradeable Left fielder and need a reliever,I zero in on that team first to see if I can't make a deal with them

The next thing I try to do is establish my teams identity by playing to my players strengths, once I do that I'll determine the weak spots and try to make deals accordingly.

If I can afford it I leave ready or near-ready stud prospects in the minors for April and May or even until the All Star break. That way you gain an extra year of service from them before they are arbitration and eventually free agent eligible.

Of course this has to be balanced against the major league team's performance/needs and (if overdone) degrading the prospect's achievement to his potential by having him in the minors too long.

Not necessary for middle relievers as typically they flame out within six years and are easier to replace.
