Mark Mulder -- Is He Done?
Mark Mulder pitched a third of an inning today in Philadelphia before coming up lame and laving the game with two runners on base and one out in the first.
You feel bad about thinking something like that, but somehow given how ineffective he was on this day and how quickly he tweakjed his shoulder, I can't help but wonder if the man, with his surgically repaired shoulder, is finished as a major leaguer. It's only one outing, but it was such a bad outing that I can't help but wonder whether he has anything left at all. |

What happened. I went to throw on a load of wash and when I came back he was out of the game. Did he grab his arm or anything? was he just wild?

Even Orel Hershiser, covering the game for ESPN, has speculated this might be the end of the line for Mulder. |

Channel 5 in the UK got to the game late, so I didn't see this. Never good to see a guy coming off surgery then leaving a game after 1/3 of an inning.

That's too bad. I liked Mulder when he was with the A's.

Sad to see him go down like this. If I was a GM in the league and the A's had a pitcher on the block, I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole.

Huddy is still doing OK. Zito sucks, but that is not Beane's fault. Harden probably will join Mulder on the outside soon enough.

BB will gives lots of guys chances in Fremont, as I think the A's will suddenly find themselves with a nice bit of revenue at that point (aside from buying the land/building the park -- which I think you'll see a lot of private equity coming in for). Really, I think the A's will have the ability to spend as much as the Giants, if not more, as they really will be in the more affluent market (I wouldn't be surprised if Cisco has the most expensive tickets in baseball).

I really thought that someone bumped an old thread when I saw this.

As a Cards fan, I don't hate Jocketty for this trade as Mulder was a marquee pitcher at the time and never had injury problems. I guess you can point to his 2nd half collapse, but there was really no reason to believe he wasn't going to bounce back. I remember thinking of how much we had to give up to get him, but Mulder was a total ace so I was all for it. Barton was never going to see the field in STL with Pujols at 1B and while I loved Calero, relievers of his stature aren't ridiculously difficult to replace. As for Haren, you have to admit, you didn't see ace written on him when he was with STL. He looked like he would be a solid #3 guy (John Maine-esque). If Mulder would have continued his career progress as normal, this trade would have been win-win. |
