Post question about Spring Training?

I think it would be easier if I gave you an example rather than a general ?

I'm gonna use Robbie Alomar for this example. Now Alomar in 2002 for me, was a dynamic singles/doubles hitter, hardly ever K's and plays great defense, the one "lacking" part in his game was that he hit under 20 HR. So I lowered the Batting avg to a 2, lowered the K's to a 2, lowered the defense to a 2, and put all the rest on HR. Did I just ruin this guy by accident? Should I have left the higher point values on the things he does well? I know it's supposed to "train" guys new things. But by taking points away from his "strong" points did those just become "weak"? Thru 30 games, the guy is hitting .330, so the Avg is still there, but he has struck out ALOT more than last year, he made 6 errors all last year, he has 3 already thru 30 games, and he's 4th in the NL in HR with 9 thru 30. So did I just change Alomar's entire style of playing the game? Or is it just a fluke/not that big of a thing, where you put the points in spring training. Thanks

Its probably a combination of these factors.

It could be somewhat a fluke, 30 games isn't enough to judge the entire performance on.

Spring Training points are essentially blocks of time spent devoted to training the skill, 5 of these blocks is the minimum time to maintain the current skill level, more than this could increase the ability, less than this could hurt the ability.

So by decreasing his contact training in favor of power, you might run into this kind of effect, but it might also be an early season anomaly as well. (I would guess that its some of both)

What did your spring training report say about Alomar? (See Team News - > Player Development)

You should be able to tell what happened by any changes in his ratings/talents that resulted from spring training.

I think it's probably a fluke - Spring Training (ST) does not make major changes to a player except to the fielding range, where every grade change is major. If you lowered his fielding practise then he most likely dropped a defensive range grade - did you check that after ST?

He did drop from an A to a B in defense range...and the only spring training results I remember off the top of my head (I'm at work now), was stuff like Roberto Alomar had some Good cuts in the cage, Roberto Alomar had a bad day of swinging, etc. I don't remember anything saying, Roberto Alomar has increased his power/decreased his BB/K ratio or anything like that

It will only tell you if a player's talent or fielding/speed changes. To check ratings, you need to remember pre-ST ratings and compare to post-ST ratings.

SO from what I gather...if you have a stud player, IE Alomar or Piazza, your better off just leaving them on all 5's and letting them "remain at same level"...however if you have a guy who is really lacking in an area, IE Burnitz k's, then you should bump that to like a 6 and take 1 pt off the skill you would mind least if it got worse? Do I have this spring training right now?
