I do not know about the Hiroshima Bomber...
(I personally take it as a joke, but, you know...) Kamikaze, Harakiri, Hiroshima, Geisha, Fujiyama, Samurai, Rising sun, Sukiyaki, Tenpura... ![]() IRL, the team based in Japan would never name itself like that.

how about something nice and corporate? i had a fictional japanese league a while ago, my some of my favorite names i came up with were the osaka news bears, fujita tekkosho shrimpers (sendai) and wakayama hanwa mariners.
you can also claim the sendai livedoor phoenix, who were beaten out by the tohoku rakuten golden eagles as the expansion *** franchise. i think you can find their logo out there fairly easily too.

Thunder. I've loved the Tsunami nickname, but believe it should only be used for cities which start with an "S" sound or its lost its touch.

![]() It's common for the Japanese teams to have their parent company names, and team nicknames are usually very simple, and not necessarily "Japan-Oriented". Nicknames for the *** teams are Giants, Bay Stars, Dragons, Carp, Tigers, Swallows, Golden Eagles, Fighters, Buffaloes, Lions.... All taken from American sports teams. Speaking of "lack of originality", ha?

What about Toyota Lexus?
Sounds like a Japanese team, does not it?

Well, the Hiroshima Bombers is inappropriate, I know, I know no harm intended, and its all in fun and this is a message board and so on....
I wouldn't select any of the combinations that are in the poll. I always liked Ryuu which means Dragon. Not sure what the plural would look like. But the Tokyo Ryuu sounds cool. I also like Cherry Blossoms, Pearl or Shinju, Cats or Neko The Tokyo Neko's sound cool and I might use this if I do any Asian expansion. Overall, If I expand into other countries I attempt to capture some of the culture. |

Kamikaze and Bombers are somewhat tasteless. Don't like Tsunami because of the negative connotations due to recent events. So, go with Thunder, though its only an OK name.

Well, no. These aren't "serious" names and I would never expect any Japanese based team to "use" them in real life. So, yes - all fun and yucks here. Poor taste - I guess so but I refuse to willingly be part of the section of society that "PCs" us into oblivion. ![]() Still, I *knew* I should have used Tokyo Talons instead of the Bombers.

If the OP's intent is to go out of his way to not be "PC," then perhaps he already has his mind set on the types of names he wants to use. I'm wondering, then, why he is asking for advice on this forum. Any bookstore worth the name will have a decent Japanese dictionary. That would be a good source of Japanese words to use as team names. Or, perhaps an online dictionary. |

Again, though to be fair, I don't know the context of his league or intent or direction of the league or anything of that nature. However, assuming that RL events happened I don't believe any reasonable person would say that Hiroshima would name their team the Bombers, neither would NY being less than 100 years or so removed from the event. Also, with natural disaster names, I look at these differently. I see these as more reasonable becasue they speak to a possible local distinction and if we start to go down that slope then where does it end exactly.. Also, the intent of a Tornando is not to kill or destroy but is a weather phenomenon that has the potential to destroy. I personally don't use them typically because I try to use more traditional names. With Bomber I don't have a problem with either really but not if it is tied to a location where a bomb or explosive device was actually used to kill many people. I know it applies to Bomber Airplanes but a team would have to realize that many would not make the distinction plus in this specific example of Hiroshima a Bomber was used to drop the bombs. I like Texasmame's naming polls and have no problem with them and I like the discussion that it spurs. Last edited by toxicavenger74; 06-27-2008 at 09:07 AM. |

Go with Tokyo Nippons. Nippon is just a native name for Japan (would be like a team from New York calling themselves Americans) and then if you want to be at all inappropriate with it you can just call them Nips.
