BZ 1746: Defensive Imports
I have discussed this with a number of people in other threads but decided to start one of its own to try to get an answer. Can you please return the option of importing histotical players defensive positions and abilities based on either their entire career or their rookie season when recalc is turned off. As it is it only takes into account their rookie season.

I'm having issues with defensive ratings in historical imports with recalc off. Some players, ie, Bobby Bonds in my 1969 season having defensive ratings as low as someone who never played the position. Any player who played RF & CF in their career has this problem. The issue you are mentioning may play a part in it. I have a database I created which includes only 1969 stats and I don't have the problem when I use that database. This is why I am thinking what you're saying may be part of the problem. Last edited by StyxNCa; 07-07-2008 at 03:50 PM. |

When you import they are based on the season you are importing. I know you play stand alone seasons, but I move on from season to season. In the past you had an option to allow rookies to import with their fielding either based on the rookie season you are importing OR to base them on the players entire career (which is what I would prefer but again as an option so you could choose the way you prefer). I just want to see that option returned to the game. Also, I have had a number of issues with outfielders getting god awful ratings as well. So bad that they are not even rated (visually on the player screen) at the position they are asigned.

Supposedly the issue of low ratings has been logged. At least it was posted as logged on the thread I had about it. The thread wasn't moved to the logged area though, so who knows. |

Personally, I work from the oldest post to the most recent, so repeatedly bumping your thread is only going to serve to keep me from noticing your post.

Add another voice to this. I can't figure out how the game assigns positions and imports ratings. Ankit's db lists in every season every position someone played in his entire career, so if it imports based on seasons, it should be pulling in every position. I haven't seen anyone import with more than 2. I've tried replacing the fielding csv's in the ootp stats directory but it doesn't change anything. Is it just taking their top position and ignoring the rest?
People say it assigns ratings based on the import season, but that doesn't even seem to be happening. I imported Jolbert Cabrera in 2001 using the game's supplied db (so no career averages). These are his games played that season as per B-R.com - LF 36 CF 35 2B 28 3B 27 RF 18 SS 14 He imported as a LF with 30 ability, and nothing else. This is obviously broken and needs to be fixed immediately.

I have noticed dramatic differences in defense positions and ratings between the two. With recalc off, for example, everyone's ratings seem pretty low. With it on (whether I set it for recalc 1 season or 3 seasons), everyone who played much at all seem to have ratings that are too high. I do know that one of the recalc (on or off) settings doesn't rate them at all the positions they played much and the other setting does a better job of it though I can't say off the top of my head which setting does what. As in OOTP10? Thats sad if true. At least in the past you could work around the issue with a modified DB. You can't even do that now since the game will not rate players at all the positions that were actually available to them that particular season. Oh well, SAT v6 will be coming out soon and I return to work this week since school is starting back up. This is still a good game but it seems more and more of the things that worked well in the past seem to go missing in the next version. This is not a knock on anyone who beta-tested the game and you may do this anyway, but it seems you need to get some new blood who views areas of the game that the present/past testers may not have looked at too closely. I know this version was stated as being the best historical version ever but it has stepped back in a number of ways in that area as well.

This is a glaring bug in the game that kills the historical experience. A utilityman imports with one position. Those guys make a living on their defensive versatility. When Jolbert Cabrera imports as a horrible fielding LFer and nothing else, he's useless. He'll never have a ML career. Jackie Robinson's ability to play all over the infield was a huge asset to the Dodgers. Jimmie Foxx played 1B, 3B, and C, but he'd probably import as a 1B, the least valuable position of all. The list goes on and on.
This isn't just an issue with custom dbs, or with career-vs-season options, or with anything else like that. It is, plain and simple, a problem with the way the game imports defensive ratings, something that cannot be reasonably worked around. With all the work that presumably went into 19th century support, I'd trade that feature for a properly functioning defensive importation. It's a basic necessity.
