Doubleheaders

I have not noticed this before, but my historic solo league (1962) is scheduling and playing doubleheaders, is that something new for OOTP9?

Historical leagues use the original major league schedules, and those have, depending on the year, plenty of scheduled doubleheaders.

So, strictly speaking, no, it's not new. Though it might be easier to spot them now as I believe some indications have been put on the schedule screen so players can see upcoming twin bills and adjust their lineups if necessary.
