The Post War Baseball League is beckoning.

The Post War Baseball League has GM openings for the Philadelphia Athletics, Cincinnati Reds and the New York Yankees.

The Athletics are a challenge for the most grizzled of OOTP veterans. Here is the opportunity to shape a team in your own image.

The 1946 Reds feature the hurling heroics of aces Johnny Vander Meer

and Ewell Blackwell.

The Yankees send forth Joe DiMaggio and Phil Rizzuto into the fray. The pennant races are coming to a boil and these PWBL franchises require the guidance of active and dedicated owners. Drop by the website, fill out an application and join us as we play out this chapter in baseball's glorious history.

The PWBL is cooler than a top hat on a peanut M&M. It is a historical league which began in 1946. We are just entering August and we are ready to finish out the inaugural year of the PWBL with a bunch of active owners. If you think you're swanky enough, then step up to the plate and join us.

Right now I am in charge of the White Sox in the American League. We have some older guys who will be eased out of the roster and we hope to do some wise drafting and be contenders in a few years. Most likely with my skill the White Sox look forward to a bleak future.

The PWBL has a great group of conscientious, active owners. I'm a late arrival myself, but I'm already having a fine time with the Senators (believe it or not)

Come on over to 1946 and check it out.

I have to concur with my fellow owners. We have had some growing pains with turnover, but we are now down to a VERY active and interested group of owners.

I'd like to take over the Reds, if they are still available. Please e-mail plr15@aol.com if there is still an opening in your league. This league sounds great to me, a perfect point in baseball history to join in. Let me know.

Hot off the PWBL Press

Cardinals Soar in 10 Game Win Streak

After collecting his second Batter of the Month Award for his sterling work in July, Stan Musial demolished National League pitching during the first half of August and ignited a 10 game winning streak for the Cardinals. Musial won his 2nd Batter of the Week Award for his unbelievable hitting numbers during the previous week, batting .607, scoring 11 runs and driving in 11 runs as well during six games while slugging an extraordinary .826 to boot.

Key to the Cardinals rise in the standings was a 3 game sweep of division leaders, the Brooklyn Dodgers, by a combined score of 17-4. A frightening display of hitting and pitching prowess against the National League's most successful side. New pitching acquisition Al Benton has been rock solid and his arrival has stabilized the St. Louis bullpen as well with Al Brazle dropping from the rotation into the setup role. Greenberg has continued his unequaled abitlity to drive in runners in his new uniform with an uncontested 106 RBI, a full 11 ahead of the runner-up. His slugging and the protection he provides for Musial in the lineup have been vital.

Williams, Oklahoma native Fred Martin had his baseball dreams delayed by service to his country but his patience and dedication have been rewarded manifold. The 31 year old is an almost certainty to be named the 1946 National League Rookie of the Year and is a strong candidate for the Cy Young Award. A 20-5 record in 232 IP with a 2.51 ERA is a strong indicator of the quality of his work as anchor of the staff. His stunning debutante season has been vital to the Cards progress up the table.

St. Louis GM Scott Falkowski is to be commended for the deal which brought the Tiger Trio to Sportman's Park to the delight of Cardinals supporters. Manager Eddie Dyer has blended in the new talent superbly and Al Brazle's unselfishness in accepting the setup role has been key as well. The Cardinals have a great deal of talent and egos in the clubhouse to deal with yet Dyer and Falkowski seem to have hit upon a winning combination. Dodgers and Cardinals fans look with keen interest to the 3 game series between the two clubs on Sept. 13-15 at Sportman's Park realizing that a season may hang in the balance on the results.

Throughout the National League, excitement with the pennant race is the order of the day. Will Stan the Man lead his team to Series glory? With Rube Melton and Joe Hatten returning from injury, can the Dodgers stave off their blistering hot challengers. The stage has been set, time to turn the page.

The PWBL is accepting applications for the open GM positions with the Athletics and Yankees. Answer the call of baseball's heroes of summer's past.

The Cincinnati Reds have been filled, but the New York Yankees and Philadelphia A's are still available and ready for your command.

Senators 'Invade' Cuba

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Washington Senators and the Cuban Baseball League have announced a working agreement that will at last give the Nats a AAA affiliate.

The Cuban league has agreed to convert from a winter league to a schedule that roughly conforms to that of North American baseball, and the Club Cienfuegos franchise will develop Senators farmhands at the AAA level.

Club Cienfuegos is known affectionately as the Elefantes. Their motto, "El paso del elefante es lento pero aplastante" (roughly translated as "The elephant's steps are slow but squash you flat") is particularly appropriate for a five-time Cuban League champion that has featured such stars as Martin Dihigo, Cool Papa Bell and Luis Tiant.

It is rumored that 39-year-old veteran pitcher Bobo Newsom, now toiling for the Senators, will be the first Senators arrival in Cienfuegos. "The thinking is that Bobo, having played for 14 professional teams, will be able to adjust," a Senators source said.

"He might even want to add another name to his resume," the source said. "And the fans in Cienfuegos just might think Bobo is a Spanish name."

The source refused comment on a report that Senators will be paid half the amount of their salaries in the form of cigars.

Baseball Trivia

Q: How many teams have won 100 games for three consecutive years?

A: Since 1900, there have only been four such dynasties.

Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics won 313 games from 1929-31.

With a lineup featuring Jimmie Foxx

and Mickey Cochrane,

and a rotation led by Lefty Grove (considered by some the best pitcher of all time),

the A’s won the World Series in ’29 and ’30, but lost in seven games to the Cardinals in ’31.

Flash forward fifteen years to the opening season of the PWBL. Hall of Fame Manager Connie Mack still guides the team from the dugout. However, the A's are in need of a wise and committed GM to usher in a new era of dominance. The Yankees GM position remains open at present as well and a leader is needed for the team to knock the usurpers fom Boston from atop the American League standings.

Ripped from the PWBL Headlines

Boston Offensive Explosion

Even Dom DiMaggio, who tends to be quiet and shun the media, couldn't stay silent after the Tuesday, Aug 13th game against the White Sox.

"Six for seven! Six runs! Seven Ribbies! Even Joe hasn't done that!" smiled Dom after the 26-5 drubbing of Chi-town, leaving them a Whiter Shade of Pale Hose. It was an amazing game - every Sox player who got to bat got on base at least once - as Eddie Smith and Ted Lyons took the brunt of the beating.

And they weren't finished.

The very next day - Boston 16 - Chicago 1. 15-1 by the fifth inning. DiMaggio kept up his hot bat with a 3 for 3 performance, and Teddy Ballgame went 3 for 5. Even pitcher Dave Ferriss got into the act, going 2 for 4 with 3 runs scored.

After a bit of a slump - the Sox have come back strong - holding a 10.5 game lead of the Yankees. There is some concern about Tex Hughson (17-6, 2.38 ERA) going down with an injury, but he'll be back in three weeks - and should be well rested. Mickey Harris (14-9, 3.70 ERA) will also miss a start this week with a minor injury. Claude Wagner (3-3, 5.00 ERA) and Jim Bagby (2-2, 5.09 ERA) will get spot starts in their place, the better pitcher to take Hughson's spot in the rotation, while Jim Wilson waits in the wings in triple A.

Ted Williams continues to set his sight on the triple crown - with a .338 average, 33 homers and 102 RBIs. Williams is currently 3rd in batting behind teammate Johnny Pesky (.351) and Senator Mickey Vernon (.341). In fact, the Red Sox have 3 of the top 5 batting averages in the AL, the top three in doubles, and the top three in runs scored.

The Sox lead the majors in batting average and ERA, and despite the rumblings from Brooklyn and St. Louis - it appears the team to beat this year likes their "chow-dah".

The Yankees have now been filled, leaving us with only one open team, that being the Philadelphia Athletics. I'm not going to blow smoke, they flat out suck. Almost no talent and a terrible record. That is precisely why they need a smart and active owner to take on the challenge of leading the perenial laughingstock to the crown!

The league is now full, but we would love to get a head start on our waiting list. Check us out, we are a very active, commited, and fun league where the game itself is the total focus.

The Philadelphia Athletics have once again become open. The World Series is currently taking place, and once that ends the real fun begins. The arbitration period will begin shortly followed by what promises to be an eventful off-season. The promise of a real challenge and a very high draft choice for a bumper crop of rookies waits.

The Philadelphia A's ended a streak of 8 consecutive last place finishes in the American League in the first season of the PWBL. Now with the offseason just days away and a bevy of talent in the upcoming draft, the A's new GM will have to sift through an assortment of fine talents in making the teams selections. Here are a few of the HOF caliber players in this years draft.

Jackie Robinson reports for duty.

Duke Snider, the Silver Fox, breaks out the heavy lumber in center field.

Nellie Fox anchors the infield.

The Earl of Snohomish is ready to rule.

Big Klu packs some serious muscle.

While Larry Doby patrols center field with consummate flair.

Making your choice will be difficult but joining the PWBL as the new A's GM is a no-brainer. An active and committed GM is just the ticket for a rebirth of success in Philadelphia. Drop by the league website and fill out an application. Hope to be competing against you soon.
