Class of 1798
Daniel Mendoza (HW) 1780 - 1795W23(16) / L6(2) / D0 - English Heavyweight Champion Selected by 94.44% of balloting members on first ballot. Mendoza held the English title from 1784 to 1792 and was the number one heavyweight in the world when the REC issued their first rankings in 1794. He retired following a loss to Big Ben Bryan in the world title elimination tournament of 1795. Full Record Class of 1805 Big Ben Bryan (HW) 1786 - 1804W28(18) / L8(3) / D2 / ND2 - Two-time World Heavyweight Champion and English Champion Selected by 81.25% of balloting members on first ballot. Big Ben lost his English belt to John Jackson and then was defeated by Jackson again in the first World heavyweight title bout. Bryan claimed the World title for himself in 1797 and held it until 1800 when Tom Johnson worked his miracle. Following Johnson's retirement, Bryan had one last big fight in him as he reclaimed the belt with a surprising win over Joe Lashley in 1803. He surrendered the belt to Lashley in 1804 after making one defense against an over-matched Bishop Blaize. Full record Last edited by Lord Cornelius Acton; 03-06-2008 at 09:13 PM. |

1802 Balloting is now over. The results are as follows:
Holdovers from 1801: Chevalier de Saint Georges - 5.26% Bob Watson - 73.68% Beef A-La-Mode - 21.05% Paddington Tom Jones - 15.79% Gentleman John Jackson - 63.16% First Timers: Elisha Crabbe - 0.00% Isaac Perrins - 0.00% One Eye Sailor - 0.00% Jack Doyle - 0.00% Bill Love - 0.00% Bill Jones - 0.00% Jackson and Watson continue to receive strong support as does Mr A-La-Mode (perhaps due to the recent mass-escape at the asylum) but no one gained entrance to the Gallery. None of the first timers will return for the 1803 ballot and the Chevalier has missed out on his fifth and final run. |

1803 Balloting is now over. The results are as follows:
Holdovers from 1802: Bob Watson - 78.95% Beef A-La-Mode - 21.05% Paddington Tom Jones - 10.53% Gentleman John Jackson - 57.89% First Timers: Tom Johnson - 57.89% Dick Goodison - 0.00% Bill Wood - 0.00% Watson failed his final ballot by one vote and will exit along with Beef A-La-Mode after five attempts. Jones' support seems to be slipping heading into his final year of eligibility while Jackson and Johnson made a nice showing. Last edited by CONN CHRIS; 02-25-2008 at 04:54 PM. |
