Marlins, Hanley Ramirez on verge of 6-year, $70 mil deal

Quote:
Lambasted for their major league-low $21 million payroll and perpetual trading of star players, the Marlins are finally keeping one in the fold.

Shortstop Hanley Ramirez told an acquaintance he has agreed to the framework of a six-year, $70 million extension. That ranks as the richest contract in franchise history, topping the six-year, $61 million deal Gary Sheffield received in April 1997.

Ramirez's contract is pending a physical and an official announcement might not come until early next week.

Marlins President David Samson and President of Baseball Operations Larry Beinfest had no comment late Friday. Andy Mota, Ramirez's Weston-based agent, could not be reached.

Things are changing in South Florida. Stadium coming, the stars won't be leaving town anymore.

Makes the 21-14 start even sweeter.

Florida has a really strong young base. Hopefully they can keep their players and build a solid young team for several years.

Was tough seeing him leave the Sox organization but getting back Beckett makes it a good trade all around.

I got him in the 27th round of a keeper league two years ago. Loving that keeper. Course, I can only keep a player for 2 years so, he is gone after this year.

I might actually be able to purchase a Marlins jersey now, though I'm still worried they'll trade him in two years.

I wouldn't call it a bargain. Jose Reyes' equivalent deal two years ago was 5 years 32.25m.

I wouldn't say 1 more year with 37.75m more is a bargain, unless you consider the Reyes' deal an insane bargain.

We can also compare this extension to the Tulowitzki's recent contract.

Ramirez's deal will be paying his MLB service year 4 to year 9 for 70m.

Tulowitzki's deal will be paying his MLB service year 2 to year 7 for 31m ( year 8 option 15m).

Even if Ramirez could be considered better than both Reyes and Tulowitzki, it's definitely not a bargain.

Ramirez was expected to get 8 million in arbitration this fall. Now, if you want to be conservative, you can say he gets 8, 10, 12 over his 3 years of arbitration eligibility. At which time, he then hits free agency and gets his 17-20 million a year (which he would get). That's 81-90 million right there.

Yeah, so it's just the regular discount for pre-free agency deals, which people often mistake for bargain.

It's not really a bargain considering every pre-free agency contracts are constructed similarly.
