Is my rookie getting shafted? Vote
The playoffs are over and I just ran "ask computer" for the awards. I thought for sure that my guy would be one or two in the running, but he wasnt even one of the top three. I don't want to just change it in favor of my player. So please vote who you think should win rookie of the year. Your votes will be final.
Here are the AI picks, in order. 1) LF Corey Brown 2) 2B Kris Peebles 3) 3B Matt Sweeney 4. RF Jeff Ford Code:
G AVG HR RBI R SB CS AB HITS 1) LF Corey Brown 122 .278 27 72 84 7 10 450 125 2) 2B Kris Peebles 149 .301 3 71 77 22 13 585 176 3) 3B Matt Sweeney 140 .275 27 77 64 1 2 454 125 My Guy 4. RF Jeff Ford 146 .300, 14 58 93 56 24 637 191 Last edited by edm; 06-04-2008 at 10:46 PM. |

I'd want to see a few more things before rendering a final decision. Their OBA and SLG (and OPS) come immediately to mind. I'd also like to know more about their teams to determine how vital they were: Their VORP scores would help as well.
Just from what you've given me though, I'd say Brown/Sweeney neck and neck. Ford's average doesn't make up for his lack of power. The number of times Ford is CS nearly obliterate his SB total. A ratio of 2:1 is about breakeven. Using JUST the stats you've given me, which again is not enough, I'd try to fake an OPS and factor in stolen bases as follows: Hits + 3xHR (for slugging) + SB - (2x CS) / AB Brown: 125+81+7-20 = 193/450 = .429 Peebles: 176+9+22-26 = 181/585 = .309 Sweeney: 125+81+1-4 = 203/454 = .447 Ford: 191+42+56-48 = 241/637 = .378 Last edited by CatKnight; 06-05-2008 at 03:04 AM. |

Er...found the stats I wanted:
Brown: .365/.529/.894 29.7 VORP Peebles: .340/.426/.766 22.9 VORP Sweeney: .327/.515/.842 23.7 VORP Ford: .337/.400/.737 16.8 VORP Based on THIS I would have voted for Brown. (I already voted for Sweeney. Oh well.) Definitely not Ford though. For all his SBs (and CSs), Brown and Peebles actually got on base more, and all three hit for more power. |

I'd vote for Ford if he would have got on Base a little more and would have been caught stealing a little less. I am tempted to make him #2 behind Brown. Peebles being a 2B would get some points, but with that OBP. Not good enough. He is basically Ford except a worse baserunner (so unless his defense is outstanding....). Sweeney OBP isnt so good. And I dont vote solely on HRs (which is his only decent stat. So barring him being the 2nd coming of Brooks (or at least a good glove) he doesnt really have any outstanding asset other than power. Brown has good power (which is better than all but Sweeney.) And has an OBP that is significantly higher than the others.
So my order: 1) Brown 2) Ford* 3) Sweeney* 4) Peebles * very close in my ind offensively. I'd have to use defense as a tiebreaker.

I've got to agree with you, edm. The 191 hits and 56 SB's along with other stats are just too much to ignore. He definitely got my vote.
