1940's Style Menu

I've been trying to come up with a menu that would reflect the 1940's era, but I have been stumped a bit. I was hoping that maybe someone in the community could come up with something or if in the least, people could throw out some ideas that could work to give the feel of the era. Thanks in advance.

knuckler, have you seen Hardball Heroes' reports? The league is in the 30s and I tied the reports to the website, but it also has an older feel to it, IMO.

It's really well done and very sharp. I'm not sure I'd be able to re-create it though.

Why not try something like a Sporting News newspaper heading for the menu screen?

Looking at some WWII posters and 1940s ads should give you some ideas about the way fonts were used in that era. The war posters used a lot of blocky fonts with no serifs, so the headlines would be easy to read from a distance.

They also liked to incorprate this more fluid-looking font which had a hand-painted look to it. If you go to 1001freefonts.com and select the "Brush" menu, the first one, "Art Brush", is the closest font to what I'm referring to. They seemed to like slanting it, as if someone came up to the poster and wrote a slogan really quick on it with a paint brush. See also the movie posters of the era.

Some of the Art Deco fonts at Art Deco fonts & dings also fit in with the 1940s era, if you choose one of the cleaner and less busy-looking fonts. As for colours you could probably use just about anything, although red-white-and-blue were popular in the U.S. for obvious reasons. Note how this 1945 World Series program incorporates all those colours, plus stars and stripes, but doesn't explicitly use an American flag:

The 1940s is one era where you can use some retro clip art and have it look cool and authentic instead of cheesy. This ad is from 1947, for example:

This is what I ended up with. It's not that indicative of the era, but it will do for my purposes. I have that Art Brush font already, and you're right, it's a good one, as are Quigley Wiggly, Polo, Polo Brush, and Expo.

Having taken advantage (on several occasions) of the generosity and skill of the uni/logo makers I'd like to have a go at some league banners/menus, but as a novice in this department I'd be glad of any advice about getting started.
